Bangkok: Live Music

Looking for a nice place to listen to music and have a very drinks. Nothing fancy or too upscale. Not looking for a too young a crowd or a bunch of high rollers. Don't want a morgue either.

Perhaps in the Sukhumvit area near the Pleonchit Station?

Filipino or Thai girl Bands?

Try the Huntsman. It's in the basement of the Landmark Hotel, near Nana station. Great band! Great variety of music. Fun crowd. Also good eats if you get hungry.

Thanks Carol. I was beginning to wonder if all the Asia forum folks did was eat and go to spas! We'll give the Huntsman a try.

There is fantastic live music all over the city! Huntsman is just handier to Ploenchit/Nana than some of my other favorites.

I also like to listen to live jazz. Saxaphone, at Victory Monument, comes to mind. It's a smaller place, quite intimate.

Then there's the live stage at Suanlum night bazaar. Always very entertaining.

My favorite night spot is Tawandang Germany Brewery (the original one is where I go... I understand there are at least two now, maybe three of these around BKK). The food is great, and the live stage "show" is always memorable. There is dancing in the aisles if you'd like, and you feel the rhythm. Tawandang is almost all Thai, very few farangs! The first time we went, we were the only farangs in the place! Always a friendly crowd (of several hundred) in this big place. Good tables for the show are taken early.

If "nice" and "handy" and "good music" is what you want, then start at the Huntsman. They have a fantastic Filipino band right now.

BTW, I like to eat and shop, but I don't do spas like the majority here do. My sight seeing is pretty basic... been to BKK 11 times and finally saw the palace on the 11th trip! I prefer to relax, wander the markets and sois, and enjoy my many friends in BKK.

Carol, thanks again. I used the word "nice" and I know that is relative and subjective. Friendly and fun are better words.

I have a son (bradinbangkok) who is in BKK several times a year, and often for 6 weeks at a time. He is my tour guide, and he takes me to all these "fun" and "friendly" places. I'm not sure I would have found them on my own... :)

Carol, nice situation for you.

We want to break out of the gym, dinner, massage, bed routine. Most of the times we came before I was working all day and my wife was out shopping or sightseeing with her friends. Both of us were often too tired to do much else.

I agree, I have a nice situation. I get to travel a lot. I'm very lucky. Guess you can say I've been blessed.

For some excellent jazz (and good drinks/food), check out The Living Room at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. Jazz from 5-8pm from long time resident Randy Cannon, then International jazz musicians play from 10pm until midnight.

There is (or at least was) a very good Thai girl band at Titanium on Suk Soi 22. Check out the Ice Bar upstairs serving all sorts of infused vodkas.

Best live music by far plays nigtly (except Sundays)at a place colled Addmakers on soi Lang Suan (corner of soi 5 on left hand side if you coming from Chidlom.

Good and cheap thai food & Snacks as well as cheap booze.

If you go friday or saturday nights, book a table; the place is packed to the rafters.

We've probably not mentioned the music because there's so much of it all around Bangkok until we don't even think about mentioning it. There are lists of places and what's happening musically in the Bangkok Post which your hotel should provide you with daily. Just pick what interests you. Happy Travels!
