i did not think the klongs were nearly as depressing as some of the sights along the main river....as you say it is reality....there were some pretty nice places along the klongs as well, didn't you think??

i bet some of those people would be shocked by riding through parts of nyc???

Indeed, some of the sights along the CP were also depressing, but in the klongs they were closer.

There were some attractive houses along the klongs, right next to the blight.

But did you notice that those Thai people were always smiling anyway? Regardless of their lot in life? I'm wondering if it has something to do with their religion? Anyone have any thoughts on that? Reincarnation... a better life next time??? That sort of thing???

Don't mean to stir up anything here...

My cousin, who is from Detroit, also was sad to see the poverty along the Khlongs. She said she fely voyeuristic looking at poor people as exhibits for a tourist. I responded similarly to Carol by pointing out that all of the people we saw seemed glad to see us. I couldn't help but add that I had not found this to be true in Detroit.

Good point, Andy! I might add that Chicago isn't so "happy" either!

The Thai folks along the klongs all smiled and waved! I was not at all depressed at what I saw. I'm sorry that others have a different view of the situation. I guess it will make us appreciate our own life a bit more??!!
