i would only make this final comment....i think form reading so many reports here that often your overall impression of bkk is influenced greatly by where you stay and the reaction garnered by that stay....

some budget places are very nice, but others are geared to young backpacker types and would not work for more mature folks....

beware of what you choose

btw, seems to me that if you need to pay say $160 for a hotel for the 5-6 nites you are only talking an additional $250-400 which when compared with the price of your trip is not much to assure comfort and the amenities you want????

For location, the Adelphi is really hard to beat. The fact that it is an apartment hotel, rather than a hotel, should not deter someone from staying there. Their studio rooms are much more like a hotel, but with the kitchenette added.

The studios have only the rainbath shower in the bathroom, no tub. The 1=bedroom apartments have a nice soaking tub as well as the big rainbath shower. The good thing about apartment hotels is the amount of space you have. Some have more space than others. I like having the fridge for my water, yogurt, leftovers, etc.

The Adelphi is just one of many apartment hotels I've tried in Bangkok. It is not the most spacious, but I weigh several options. For me, distance to the skytrain is the most important thing I look for. Adelphi wins hands down.

I've been in the lobby of the Asia Hotel. The lobby looks nice, but I've never seen a room there. The skytrain is right outside the door so that is a plus.

You can pay a lot less for a place to sleep in Bangkok. MUCH less. I have stayed at a place called Patumwan House, which is also an apartment hotel. It is very basic, no pool, very clean, airconditioning, friendly staff who speak some English, a little restaurant in the lobby that has very good Thai food, etc. The location of this place is within walking distance to MBK and Siam Discovery/Paragon shopping areas.

Patumwan House, the last time I stayed there, was about $35 per night. I recommended it to fodorite isismonroe, and she and her DH have stayed there, when in Bangkok, ever since. They love it!

A location near to the Grand Palace, for me, would not be a plus feature. Yes, it is too far off the beaten (shopping) path for me, but I would also get very tired of being hassled by the touts all the time, because you are in a heavy tourist area. I don't see any of that at the Adelphi, or at Patumwan House either!

So... those who are still searching for Bangkok accomodations, what are you thinking about all of your options?

Carol

Carol, is the Adelphi good for long term stays? I'm staying in BKK for 4 weeks this winter (first time for that long!) and would like an apartment-style place with good monthly rates. thx....or if anyone has other suggestions? Guess i'll check out Center Pointe also

We have a Dec/Jan 4-week reservation already booked at Adelphi. The cost is (was... may have gone up since I booked) 62,000 baht all in. A good price! But, there is no breakfast included in that price. That's OK for us. DH likes to make his own oatmeal, and I can easily keep yogurt, OJ, cereal, fruit on hand. We won't feel as though we are missing out on the buffet b'fast at all, although it is a good one, not a great one.

Another long term place to look at (with larger apartments than Adelphi, but not as new or modern looking) would be the Somerset Suan Park View. I stayed there one year ago July, for about 10 days. It was not quite so handy to the skytrain as Adelphi, but definitely worth looking into IMO. The walk to either the Ploenchit or the Chitlom skytrain station was maybe 7-8 minutes instead of the 1-2 from Adelphi! It seems to me that maybe (?) the name of the Park View has changed recently??? Did someone here tell me that??? Or was it a friend in BKK?

Carol: You are right! The Suwan Park View is now the Bristol (I think, anyway it is a "B" word).

Dgunbug: We stayed there last Dec/Jan in a two bedroom apt for a couple of weeks and a one-bdrm for the remainder. Both were nice and convenient to the BTS. The breakfast buffet wasn't as good as we have had other places -- the Marriott Resort, for example.

This year we are spending the month of Jan 2009 at the Adelphi Suites based on Carol's recommendation. I understand it is newer, and closer to the BTS -- as you say -- and we are looking forward to it.

Carol, if you are there from Jan 10-14, maybe we will meet in the lobby or elsewhere at the Adelphi. We booked through the hotel and our confirmation says bkfst is included. Then we will be back on Jan 18 and stay until Feb 2. The other days are for a quick train trip to Chiang Mai.
Shall I wear a red flower on my shoulder so we recognize one another? HA-HA.

Hope to meet you in January in BKK.

Sandra (mcbeanie)

PS How do we get to your friend's restaurant from the Adelphi? (Maeng, is it?)

thanks Carol...it's the same price now. seems like a good deal, even though we'll go away for long weekends (and in essence pay for two hotels those nights). I stayed at the Somerset -- and they did change names but don't remember to what -- and it was fine if a little blah feeling.

Compared to Somerset, the pool/workout room at Adelphi look a big improvement, as does the overall look of the place. Guess I'd better go ahead and book....!

We will also be leaving the Adelphi during our long stay, for two nights (over New Years Eve) to go to Pattaya. But the good news is, I used Marriott points to book the Pattaya rooms so they are "free"... (free being a relative term, as you know). There is a chance that DS and I would go to Chiang Mai for a day or two, but DH would probably prefer to just stay in BKK as he really doesn't need to go to CM for the markets.

Sandra,

We will also be there while you are in Bangkok. We arrive the morning (2 AM approx) of Jan. 31st. Wouldn't that be a hoot if a bunch of us showed up at the Adelphi Hotel with red flowers on!

I am a bit perplexed about which area of Bangkok to stay in. Please note we are not big shoppers, so that will not be our main focus. Is it better to stay near the river or more in the city center closer to the sky train?

why have you posted this?? you have received many suggestions above with lots of opportunities....

you just have to decide for yourselves it seems to me...

based on what you are willing to pay you will have to make a decision of a place that best fits that cost.....

many of us love the river, but generally it is expensive...

there is no right or wrong place to stay in bkk, everyone here has different likes and dislikes....the only warning that keeps repeating itself is to be near to public transportation: i.e. the skytrain, the river boats (limited hours) or the subway....near means less than a 5 minute walk

If it is your first trip to Thailand, and your are trying to see the sights, then no, you probably don't want to stay in the busier parts of the city. You should probably stay somewhere around the river, just for the atmosphere. I'm getting ready to make by 14th trip. I do go there for the shopping (and to see my friends).

If price is really an important consideration, do look at the Centerpoint apartment hotel, as there are some apartments with river views, if I understand correctly.

Leaving tomorrow about noon!!!

I think you would be happiest in the river area, but as has been pointed out, hotels in that area tend to be expensive. The Centerpoint Silom does have some river view rooms. The Bossotel is a budget option near the river.

I since you thought you might want to be in the Banglamphu/KSR area, I feel compelled to worn you that it is the are for young backpackers, If you are a young backpacker wanting to meet other backpackers (or someone who wishes they were still a young backpacker) it's ideal. Otherwise, no.

You've gotten a lot of advise here. Read it all over again, see what appeals to you, then go to the sawadee website and look at prices.

No one can make the choice for you. What's right for me (or any other poster here) isn't necessarily right for you.

Here are a couple more for under $100 per night. Not exactly where you want to stay, but good location and value for money.

Liz, your photos are really excellent! Thank you for providing them.
Leigh, can you tell us what you like about the two places you recommended?
I am appreciating the comments from folks who have actually stayed at some of these places. Many thanks.

Stay in the Landmark Hotel on Sukhumvit Road. Easy walk to the Skytrain, travel agents for tours, restaurants, malls street vendors and lots more.

http://www.landmarkbangkok.com/

Or choose the Pathumwan Princess Hotel if you like shopping. It is right next to the MBK shopping center. Skytrain is available to take you to many other areas of Bangkok.

You do not have to book every night at once - you could book a couple nights and then check out some other hotels or areas of the city. You might even find that a hotel at half the price is good enough - like the other millions of tourists usually do.

Good luck.
