Bangkok Hotel
 

Planning on spending 4 nights in Bangkok during our Thailand trip in september. Stayed at The Peninsula last year which was great. But with so many luxury hotels we would like to try a different one this year. Greatful for input and your experiences regarding The Banyan Three, Sukothai, The Regent, Grand Hyatt Erawan, Sheraton Grande and The Oriental. We will use your comments when deciding were to stay.

My husband and I stayed at the Oriental last month and loved it. The quality of service was fantastic. We loved eating breakfast beside the river every morning. The restaurants are fantastic. We did do the Thai dinner and watched the local dances being done across from the river in the health complex. We are going to be passing through Bangkok again and will absolutley stay here again. I wouldn't stay any place that isn't on the River. I looked at the Grand Hyatt when I was in Bangkok last year, and while it was nice, the rooms were ulta-modern and "cold", the hotel was right in the middle of the city, and you could have been in any Asian city. When you are on the River, you know you are in Bangkok. I stay at the Royal Orchid Sheraton in a suite in the Towers for less than the price of a regular room at many of the other luxury hotels.

The Sukhothai is stunning, the only problem with it is the location, it is not on the river, nor is it on the Skytrain route. The Banyan Tree is near it, but I would place the Sukhothai ahead of that.

I have stayed at the Regent many times, a stunning hotel and very conveniently located.

However to me, the Oriental will always be tops.

The Oriental is great (stayed there 2 years ago, but there was some construction going on that was quite noisy in the mornings -- apears to be completed now). I'd also look into the Shangri-La, which has a fantastic view on the river as well and is essentially next door to the Oriental. Another first class establishment, though I have not stayed there as recently as at the Oriental. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Take a look at the Shangri-La. Five star, on the river right next to the Oriental, and I was able to book 5 nights in August for $60/night on Priceline. Unbelievable!
