Bangkok heat..?
 

I have read so many comments here on the heat and humidity in Bangkok...I have lived in Florida and it gets darn hot and humid in July and August there... so if it is worse than that it could be danger of heat stroke for me..

If you live in Florida then you are most of the way there in already knowing what do do, it is not the heat so much as how your body reacts, some simple tips that I have done for years without thinking now and I guess from FL you know these anyway:
1> Have a cool shower before heading out
2> Wear loose fitting clothes, natural, cotton best
2> Drink water ( bottled and cold ), fare better for cooling the body than sodas, someone told me ( though have never tested ) also to avoid dairy
3> Go for a light breakfast and avoid oily/fatty breakfast, stick to things light
4> Taxis and modern/mall shops etc are all air-con.
5> Don't rush, take it easy, drink plenty and plenty of water and stick to a light non oily lunch, something light and simple.

I would say...not worse than Florida. I'm here now and it's unbelieveably cool for Bangkok. But I also come here in August. Was here just this past August and it was hot, but not what I would call miserably hot. Miserably hot to me is Texas in July/August. I've visited there at that time and it was unbearable. Just don't come to Bangkok in March or April....hell hot....although I've survived it...even walked from the Jim Thompson main store on Surawong to Oriental Place shopping mall, but it takes a lot of stamina and mind over matter. I live in Bangkok more than 3 years. I have noticed that this year, the weather is cool than last year and last year. I never happend like this before in Bangkok. Because I born in Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is normally cooler than Bangkok, very good weather especially in Ang Khang Mountain in Fang, that is very perfect place.

i'm wondering what "cool" means..is this a good thing? (as in 80's and less humidity). We'll be there in 3 wks!!

We were there in August and yes it is hot and humid about like Florida in the summer. It helps if you think of it like part of the other aspects of the cultural experience. How does the heat affect how people organize their day (doing things early or late) or their relationships with others (outdoor markets and open wooden houses) or their religion (open air "altars" and doors and windows wide open to the temples) or their nutrition (light but spicy food). It is like other places where the mountains or the ocean or the ice or the desert affect everything.

You are looking at tempertaures in the 30-36 degree range most of the time.

oops.. Il be going in late April...and I survive the summer by staying indoors with the air on..work out in the gym...i wear practically nothing and a hat but I still get migraines from it..when we have a heat wave in the summer it is suffocating...like an oven and is that how it is? by the way can you order Royal Thai cusine if your stomach cant handle the heat??

Oh great, we are going in March, we will probably die of heat exhaustion..Supposedly Goa is extremely hot in March as well and same with Angkor Wat! I am not so bad, but my husband dies in the heat!! Fun....

the best thing to do is not stay outside for large amounts of time except near a pool or shaddy spot...not long walks, etc...

take the skytrain and taxis even for short distances...

We were just there until Christmas, and it was in the 60'S with a few days in the low 70's-very unusual!!

Reporting from Bangkok. The weather heated up today. I just got in. Have been out in it all day and today I have worked up a definite sweat...the first day in almost three weeks. There is still a very nice breeze, though. According to the news, it's 30 degrees celcius/86 degrees fahrenheit...although it doesn't feel that hot to me. Hot is during the spring time. The humidity level has risen though since I arrived on Dec 18th. It is definitely cooler this December than in previous Decembers that I have been here. Happy Travels!

Tracy....You have not picked a good month if your husband can't take the heat. I've been in Bangkok the last week in March and Thais have told me that it was cooler then than in April and it was hell hot then. Happy Travels!

Geeze..Thanks for that Guenmai!!! We had to go in March, due to our work schedules!! We were in BKK at the beginning of March over 10 years ago,and it was scorching!! Oh well, if worse comes to worse, we will sit in the pool at the Marriott for 6 days and come home with a nice tan!!!!

How hot is "hell hot" excatly? I'm hoping to visit BKK, Angkor, some islands, and possibly N. Thailand in late April/early May. Can enyone give me actual degrees in F? Thanks!

LA, it nots the degrees so much that is the problem, which is high 80's to mid- 90's, but it is the unbelievable humidity....add to that it only abates slightly at nite

Humidity I can handle. I lived in Atlanta for over 20 years and have traveld throughout the Florida Keys, Jamaica, Mexico, and Central America in July and August. Including the ruins of Tikal this past July (110 degrees F and about 90% humidity!). If it's not any worse than that, we should be fine. If it is worse, well... I can't even imagine!

We were in BKK in March. Hottest place I have ever known -- and we live in Arizona. Humidity was suffocating. Sweated until it felt my shoes were filling. Streets so noisy we had to shout at each other from only a foot away. Fumes from motorbikes, cars, and trucks was thick as fog. Glad all stores we visited were air-conditioned. Also glad the skytrain got us home so quickly and in such comfort. Advice: wait until nightfall to do much walking about. Take some water with you wherever you go.

I live in Orlando and think that Bangkok is just a little more humid than it is here in the middle of summer and about the same temperature. We never have any problem with the heat and humidity when we are there. I guess we're used to it. What I have a problem with is the cold up north in the winter.
