Bangkok Food Tour
 

I'm not much for organized tours, but on the recommendation of some friends I tried out a new guided walking tour yesterday. "Bangkok Food Tour" takes guests on a walk around part of the Bang Rak district of Bangkok, visiting several old restaurants and stalls. Special tasting sizes of the specialties of the places where we visited were served at each stop. We had roast duck with rice, boiled egg with curry, pandan custard buns, som tam, and green curry with crispy roti.

Everything was really good. The green curry was especially tasty, without the overdose of sugar that is common to the dish in other restaurants. There were other stops at local sights along the way between the food shops, and the tour gives out radio earpieces so you can hear the commentary from the guide over the noise of traffic.

Even for a long time resident like me, there were things on this trip I probably wouldn't have ordered on my own, so it's a trip I would recommend to frequent visitors as well as first timers.

Looks yummy, Michael. I'd be interested in the name/location of the duck restaurant and the Thai restaurant that serves roti with the green chicken curry.

The tour lasts three hours - 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. They also have a new night tour of Chinatown.

The name of the duck place is Wiang Pochana, but the sign is only in Thai. It's a short way up a soi across from Centre Point Silom.

The roti with green curry place is Kalapreuk - the 'original' one, not the ones opened in shopping malls by relatives of the founder. It's on Soi Pramuan off Silom.

Excellent information, thanks a lot Michael, 1st class photos too. The Green curry looked really great, made my mouth water.

This sounds great Michael. I'm not a fan of tours usually but this would be very interesting. The Chinatown one sounds good too. I'll be in Bangkok for a good bit of July so will make sure we do at least one of them.

We have often stayed in Bang Rak area and used a number of the small restaurants so I'll be pleased to learn more. Love duck and we usually visit a small place at the end of a small soi opposite Robinsons - wonder if its the same place as I've never known its name. This year we are staying down at the Watermark building so its quite convenient to Bang Rak - will be good to learn a few more eateries.

Again Michael, really appreciate your posting this and still sad that we never got to meet 2 years ago in BKK, when dh became ill and I was not comfortable getting to the meeting venue alone . Still, I'm still looking at a return trip.

Makes me want to return to Bangkok! Love the Thai food.

I am just back from a short trip to Bangkok, and have to say that this tour was the highlight! They take up to 12 people; we had a full group, which was a very interesting international mix of friendly people, and two guides. Walked around interesting neighborhoods and went into small local restaurants, sitting down at five different tasting spots, all different, took a ferry across the river for one especially tasty sampling. Guide and her assistant shared a lot of interesting cultural information as we walked, and it was a wonderful way to see the city and taste a variety of food. Outstanding value.

Just returned from Bangkok. We did the Bangrak three hour food walking tour tour. I highly recommend it. We tasted some great food and went to places off the beaten path that we would never have ventured into if we didn't have a guide to lead us. Our guide was Nucci.
