BANGKOK EATS
What's new for eating in bangkok?
Many of us have long time favorites, but what is on your agenda for your next trip to Bangkok? something new or something different.... it could be a dive or an ultra fancy upscale place or the hottest new place in town....??? |
I read about a fantastic restaurant on one of my favorite blogs that I follow (written by an expat American living in Thailand with his partner--coincidentally one of the few blogs I read on a daily basis.)
Apparently David Thompson (author of THE definitive Thai cookbook, IMHO) who owns one of the very few Michelin-starred Thai restaurants (in London) has two offshoot protege who have recently opened an new place in Bangkok called Bo.Lan. The idea behind the restaurant, from what I can gather, is a deconstruction of Thai dishes and all basic Thai flavors (sweet, salty, spicy and sour.) They have a tasting menu that looks like way too much food for anyone to ingest for $40/person, which seems, at least looking at the food, to be a phenomenal deal. Sure, it looks hoighty-toighty, but I'd make a trip to BKK alone for this food, just looking over the menu on their website. I encourage you guys to read this: http://christao408.xanga.com/712875772/bolan-review/ I was salivating at those pictures and descriptions alone. A meal like that at least here in LA would easily cost over $150/pp. I'm hoping one of our esteemed Fodorite foodies headed for the Nov. BKK GTG will get to try this one out and report back. |
Filmwill,
David Thompson will be cooking at the annual "World Gourmet Festival" at the Four Seasons Bangkok. Another good reason for you to return now! http://press.fourseasons.com/bangkok...outheast-asia/ |
WoW... looks very interesting....lets see if andy is game...
|
pook, what do you know about this place?
|
Bob,
I haven't been to Bo Lan(translation = ancient) yet. Perhaps a change of venue for our GTG to Bo Lan? If you guys are interested then I will go and have a meal there to check it out. |
i think we should stay with kineree but go and let us know how you liked this place...
its got to be better than cheese fondue |
The Swiss now like to eat "Fodue Chinoise" or a variation of what we eat here at places like MK Suki.
Will try and make a visit before the GTG. |
The Bo Lan website looks quite nice - http://www.bolan.co.th/
Sadly the Mrs. doesn't want to go, she does not like fusion food. |
If you go, Pook, please let me know--it's definitely on my short list for our next visit.
Don't torture me with links to events I cannot attend...especially ones with great chefs! :) Kidding--but I would give anything to go to that food festival. I'm already so disappointed I cannot make the November GTG, but, alas, I will return to Thailand soon enough. Just not this year. It's just a question of when... |
I might try and check that out as its in my Luxe guide and was on my list as a maybe place, setting looks nice. Will let you know FW. (BTW i thought your response on the now closed Bangkok warning thread HILARIOUS)
|
Brad will maybe jump in with directions/menu, etc. but HIS current favorite is called Indigo. It is somewhere around soi Convent. He is raving about the place. I suppose we will all go there in December/January.
|
The festival ends the day before I get there. Always a penny short and a day too late.
Bo Lan looks very interesting, please let us know. |
Thats also interesting as that is in my Luxe guide also... darn i only have 2 nights... looks like i need to eat out both lunch times and dinner..... (i could also do elevenses!!!)
|
Interesting review. Thanks for posting the link, Filmwill. I can't tell if I'd love it or be disappointed, but I'm sure it would be an experience.
Hanuman, I understand Dang's comment about fusion food. In my experience, it's often disappointing - neither fish nor fowl. This sounds more deconstructed than fusion, though deconstructed food can be all intellect and no hedonism. Carol, I spoke with Brad about Indigo... I think he told me it was French. |
we have killed this one with praise and anticipation, now how about some others??
