Bangkok dining with a view
I recall reading somewhere on this forum about a hotel restaurant on the 50th? floor, perhaps open air, that has a great view of the city. Can anyone give me details on where, cost, menu? Other dining options with a view?

The Banyan Hotel in Bangkok has a restaurant on the roof, 61st floor, which happens to be al fresco(open air).

The restaurant on top of the Banyan Tree is called "Vertigo", open air as previously described. It's on the 61st floor, you take the elevator to the 59th floor and walk up the last two. Recommend you make reservations. My wife and I ate there recently. It is not cheap, but the food was very good, not too much in the way of lights being on the roof of course (the staff carry torches so you can see the menu). The menu (metal so they don't blow away), was not extensive but had a reasonable selection. Two courses with drinks (didn't bother with wine), was 5600 Baht. My wife (who is not fond of heights, struggled a little). The bar at one end of the roof is a little higher with amazing views.
We were there in February, so the weather was okay, but because its on the roof and open air, you have to be careful what time of year you go there. I can just imagine everyone trying to get downstairs if it started raining. Regards, Juan.

That cost really surprises me, even considering the view. At the Spice Market we had impeccable service, ambiance (though not with a view it was under the sky), presentation and food. It was a major cut above Harmonique and deservedly considerably more expensive. Yet three courses and two rounds of cocktails cost only 2300 baht.

I have also been to Vertigo (November 2002). I would say that the food is ok, not outstanding. It's a bit expensive but, after all, it's a 5 star hotel resturant. The atmosphere, view and service are good, though. The restuarant mainly caters to foreign tourists and rich locals, most of whom are celebrating a birthday or something. I think it's worth a try.

I've heard also of a similar restaurant at the top of the Meritus Suites Statetower (Silom Rd). Dine al fresco on the 64th floor! Amazing!

My son just returned Friday from his umteenth trip to BKK. He went up to Vertigo twice and enjoyed it. He can't wait to show me the place when we all go back in June. He did warn though, that you need to watch your step at the EDGE of the rooftop as you can walk right up and look OVER and not much is there to keep you secure... But other than that, it sounded lovely.
