That's because the taxi drivers are likely to be Thaksin / redshirt supporters from the North of Thailand. Be careful when approaching the topic of politics, if you say the wrong thing, you could end up miles from your intended destination!

Glad things have stopped for now, in honor of the King. Karen, how much longer are you in Bangkok?

CNN is reporting that Thais are working to clean up the "massive" mess...way over hyped as you expect from the media

I will be curious to see what happens in the next week, after the King's celebration. Please keep us informed if you are in the city. No change of plans for us, scheduled arrival early morning Dec 19.

Nice quiet day around bkk today with many offices closed.

We watched the formal ceremonies of the kings birthday in Hua Hin on TV this AM. He has difficulty speaking and sat in a fancy yellow wheelchair-- no smiles.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner in the Italian restaurant here at the renaissance cooked specifically for us by the executive chef--- main course was "blind" paella-- no sight needed to eat it... The app was a trio: a scollop (sp) with puréed pumpkin and oil; rich veal cheeks over porcini mushrooms in a wine sauce; and Iberia ham with oil.. Finally a pana cotta with raspberry sauce and a rich sorbet with chocolate crumbs. Way too much rich food but we loved it.

Tomorrow is the JT warehouse sale... What we buy will determine how big our extra suitcase purchase must be

Dinner sounds fabulous! It doesn't sound like the demonstrations interfered with a truly pleasurable trip!

Keep us updated before you leave bkk, if you can.

Day quiet again today but tons of traffic...the queen passed us as we left platinum and of course they cleared 1/2 the street for her and her series of soft yellow autos....

We bought more stuff and a cheapo rice bag Rollie for the trip home.

JT sale was decent but K did not buy that much

I am off to Central world and Paragon if I have energy today. As Bob said above I can't buy much as we are running out of room. it is fun buying funky things for the grand kids for Christmas. hard to find things for teen boys other than tee, and who knows if they will like or not.

Gsp is a trade agreement/tarrif scheme that promotes foreign trade with less developed countries. For us it allowed import of certain items tax free... Gold/stones/textiles etc were among the thai items allowed.

Maybe customs will cost you! I have never spent more than the $800 limit, and I don't buy gold or stones. Hmmm... Will be curious to know if you have to pay on coming back home.

News is saying that some 120+ opposition members in congress, along with former PM Abhisit, have just resigned.

About 150 representatives resigned today (Sunday).

Tomorrow is to be the make or break day, or so they say....GREAT, we fly out tomorrow nite, late.

Big demonstrations are planned starting about 1030 AM. It is uncertain where this will lead. The Hope is that the PM will resign, but I don't think that will happen yet.

Most people seem fed up with government, especially bangkok items.... Academics feel they are being utopian... It's a very difficult situation and very complicated. I suspect things will drag on for a while.

In the mean time we look forward to returning home and to the Christmas season... Bkk is full of lights and Christmas cheer, btw.

PS: We have been very disappointed with the bangkok Renaissance Hotel. It's 4* at best and a clear full step below the usual bkk lux hotels.
