Lee,
I think it will be absolutely fine to book the flight when you arrive the Kingdom, because Aug is in the middle of rainy season, therefore, there should not be any problems finding a seat (or more) to suit you. Bangkok airways also flies many times a day for BKK to Samui.

I don't really know whether or not you can pay with Mastercard, but Visa is more preferrable here.

enjoy your trip.

We flew from BKK to Samui a couple of weeks ago. Our connecting flight was delayed so we missed our originally scheduled flight. Since we had no problem re-booking for the next available, you can probably wait till you get there. Bangkok Airways should accept your mastercard. Note that you must pay airport taxes in Baht and that baggage limitations are pretty strict. You can e-mail them for more information at [email protected]
Good luck!

Actually, my family and I just got back from our trip to Thailand (we were there in June and July), and we tried to catch an earlier flight from Koh Samui to Bangkok. Every flight was booked full, so I'd suggest booking a flight now. However, if you're travelling alone it would probably be much easier to just wait to book until you get there.
