Bangkok Air baggage allowance- confusing!
 

We were looking on the Bangkok Air web site to determine how many bags and the weight allowance for them- and I have to say I'm a little confused...

On the one hand it says each person is allowed a maximum of 40 kg. But it does not specify if that is per bag or per person. My husband sent them an e-mail trying to clarify this and basically they just copied and pasted the same information from the web site to the e-mail.

We are trying to determine if we can take our scuba gear with us or if it is better to wait and rent when we get there. If there is a maximum per person, there's no way we can take our own gear.

The maximum od 40 kg per person is pretty standard world-wide with the exception of the US.

40 kg is very generous for baggage allowance are you sure it's not 40 lbs?

What ever the allowance is it will be for the total baggage you check in and not per piece. Some airline or airport will have a weight restriction for weight per piece of luggage for the sake of their luggage handlers. I think it's around 32 kg per luggage and if it exceed that then they will special label the luggage and might ask you to lighten it.

A good tip for Bangkok Air is to join their frequent flyer club - one of the benefits is an extra 10kg allowance on luggage

Yipes, Hanuman, you're right. It's typically 40 lbs or 20 kg.

Thanks for the help. Personally, I would rather not carry around all that scuba gear anyway! This give me a great reason to say we have to rent it...

It's all by weight, 20 kgs per person so if 2 of you then 40 kgs. Does not matter how many bags/items.

It was the weight we were concerned with...by the time you pack wetsuits, fins, BC's, masks, regulators and such-there's not a lot of weight left for clothes!

I used Bangkok Air from Samui to Bangkok today. My wife's suitcase was close to 30 kg and they didn't have any problems with that.

Thanks gard. I think we've figured that the weight restrictions are 40kg per person, so your wife's bag would have been way under. Unless she had an additional bag that also weighed 30 kg...I'd definitely be interested in finding out about that!

I've had my husband register at Bangkok Air so we can at least have the extra 10kg allotted for FF members.

I just looked on the Bangkok Air website, and I swear the information is different than we saw this weekend, or I am having a senior moment!

It is definately 20Kgs or about 40lbs. Sometimes they will let you get away with a bit more depending on the load they have for the flight but do not rely on it and if they decide to charge you it can be a steep charge.

20 kgs per person(!) ( 42 pounds or thereabouts I guess ) has been standard free baggage allowance Economy/coach for most carriers since before I remember.
I mthink they have some extra 10kgs for members or something, but the base free baggage allowance is and always was 20 kgs.
I don't know what their excess baggage charge is but on most domestic routes with most carriers it is something like B 50 per kg ( about USD 1.40 per kg, so roughly something like 67 cents a pound ), so it's not a huge amount, I personaly would not worry or trouble yourself, better to pay a few bucks for excess ( even if they charge ) than worry about it or let it affect your vacation.

Thanks, I appreciate your input. You are allowed an extra 10 kg of weight if you join their frequent flyer program, which we will attempt to take advantage of.

We will try a practice pack and see what the weight comes out to, and make a decision from there.
