I'm looking for a relaxing but entertaining vacation. My boyfriend is working in Bangkok until the end of April so I was planning on visiting him. I have never been this far away from the US but figure this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Is it possible to get some relaxation in Bangkok or is it hectic and wild like they show in the movies? If I wanted action I would just go to NYC or Miami not fly all the way to the other side of the world.

You certainly can get relaxation in Bangkok. Choose a hotel on the river with a nice pool and take Bangkok in a leisurely way. Use the water taxis for transport, choose one major site to visit each day, get massages, and eat wonderful local cuisine.

Bangkok is wonderful, NYC is NYC, Bangkok is Bangkok two different worlds. Good suggestion getting hotel by the river rather than on the Sukhumvit or Siam square area. Although we stay at the Marriott Courtyard hotel near Siam square, rated a 3 star but absolutely a 4 star, from 93 to 105 a night, close to the sky trains that will take you to the river, what is best about Bangkok unlike NYC its relatively safe and its Thailand. We live in Hawaii but come to Thailand once a year.

OP... You don't exactly say that you will need a hotel. I read into your post that you would be staying w/he boyfriend. Maybe I misread? Bangkok is, indeed, wonderful. I'm there four times a year. Sometimes solo, sometimes w/family. It is a safe (but always use caution) and friendly city. You can relax as much as you want to, or get out and go-go-go-go as well. There is a reason why Bangkok is such a popular tourist destination. It is definitely NOT NYC! or Miami, or Chicago, or Peoria!!

plenty of relaxation available in bkk.... nice hotel pools... fab restaurants... shopping.. seeing boyfriend..

yes, BKK is a world away from NYC, but also a world apart. Come and try - since everyone recommended by the river - I like to add on further, Anantara has a property too by the river, on the Thonburi side. Hilton is here too - drinks here or steak can be divine/great view. Nearby Asiatique, there's another great 5-star brand, Chatrium. They have a great buffet spread and the rooms are larger than average, suites - at very competitive prices. I've never stayed at the Anantara, but can confirm for Hilton to be a great choice, and Chatrium too. Their top floor - there's a Chinese restaurant. Again, amazing view :)

I will go with Chatrium for a kingly and relaxing stay by the riverside - lots of cheap and good food in Thonburi too. Wat Arun is also a quick boat ride away.
