Hi James,

I have seen a lot of your postings about River Kwai and the jungle rafts. I am convinced that I want to stay in this jungle rafts. I love to be in the nature. I have heard of also jungle rafts in Khao Sok, however they look a little bit more rough. I would love to go to an area with unspoiled nature and beauty. Do you know anything about this rafts in Khao Sok? Which one would you recommend, Khao Sok or River Kwai? Thanks for your advice.

If you are interested in birdwatching and nature, Khao Sok is most highly recommended. We just returned last week. See my update on Khao Sok in the tsunami update posting.

I was in Khao Sok the day recently (the day of the tsunami in fact!) and can tell you the rafts we stayed in are VERY rustic. It is my understanding that there are two substations and I'm sorry to say I only know the one out of which Dave Williams of Paddle Asia runs his operation. They have mats on the floor to sleep on, no windows of course, rickety walkways over the water to get to the bathroom and the shower. That said, it is stunningly beautiful there and exceedingly quiet. The food was very, very good too.

If you want better level of accommodation try the River Kwai Village Hotel, they have the Raftel or the Royal Wing, I think it will give a balance between natural but better accommodation.

annmcd: Did you try the All Terrain Vehicle rides (ATV )? heard they have them there now and after a recent ride I have become addicted to them !!

Thank you for all your information. Now I am a little bit confused. I think I like the River Kwai rafts better, however I will love to see the wild monkeys in Khao Sok and I don't have enough time to go to both. What a dilema. Thanks for all your info.

If you are short of time River Kwai is a couple of hours by road or train, different journey altogether. Depends how much of your vacation you want to spend.

JamesA - No, we didn't try the ATVs. We were kayaking and trying to stay as quiet as possible to see as much wildlife as we could!

I haven't been to the River Kwai rafts but have been to the Khao Sok ones recently. They were basic, but not bad. Each room had a bed, mosquito net, generator electricity. Bathrooms were shared but clean. Fun place to stay for a night or two and scenery and wildlife were stunning. Don't miss it as it's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Check out www.limestonelaketours.com for great tours into the lake. They're really good to deal with and took good care of us on our trip.
