Bali - which are the best cell phone services

Hi everyone, just a week left for our Bali trip! I had a question - while we are there, we will need to have reliable cell phone service as a family member will be having surgery back in the US and we want to regularly be in touch. We are looking for a prepaid SIM card for both voice and data. Which cell phone provider would you suggest? We are looking to make calls, access Skype, email, etc. We have unlocked Android smartphones so no access issues.

Also - do you know if we can get a SIM card for the iPad? Wi-fi is probably going to be very pricey at our hotel, so we'd prefer to go cellular if we can.

Thanks!

Baby Bear, there are several locals who post here, so watch for them to reply. They will have the info you need.

I'll jump in to eavesdrop on the answers too -- we have an iPhone and ATT -- even with their World Plan rates are 2.49 a min. Ugh.

Well, I have a Blackberry but in general Telkomsel's Simpati services are considered the overall best in coverage and services. My BB service including data is less than $10 a month, and they have daily, weekly and monthly plans. But do not include SMS and phone calls, which are extra.

Friends here who use Iphones are happy with their services too, but don't know anyone who uses an Android yet.

Just back from our Bali trip which was amazing. I wanted to pass along our cell phone recommendations. Agree with Kuluk, we went with telkomsel and the Simpati card. They have a prepaid card called the Tourist card that takes care of voice and data. We bought credit up to Rp 150,000 (about US $17) and it was more than enough. During our six days in Bali, we constantly accessed email and the net (Facebook, etc.) on the phone, made several local calls, made at least 2-3 calls every day to the US as someone in the family had just had surgery, and also sent several international texts - and with all this usage, still had a small balance left! I shudder to think what the bill would have been if we had used international roaming. Coverage was generally excellent except for the times we were up in the mountains (Kintamani, etc.) which is understandable. And you can buy the card at any Circle K store, they are all over. They set it up for you, so that's great. And you can top up your balance any time. We did not ask about the iPad, but our hotel had free wi fi in the lobby so we just used the iPad there.
