We visited Bali last November and had a great time. We flew from Singapore to Bali. We did not have any problems or feel safety was an issue.
We stayed at the Bali Oberoi which was lovely. I hated Kuta Beach. It's filthy and has lots of vendors. HAve fun.

They just held elections in Bali (10/22?) and the people were not pleased with the outcome. There were huge demonstrations in the streets and some government buildings were damaged. I believe it's the first time violence has been reported in Bali. Later that day, the officials announced that the female candidate the people wanted elected was named Vice President. After that announcement the riots turned to parties and all peace has been restored. It was reported that no tourist areas were directly effected.

i was there, alone, in November, 1989. From my friend's reports, the center of Bali remains an oasis of calm and beauty. I would stay far from the beach area, which have become touristy. The center of the island, with small villages each filled with different artisans and music and dance every night is the *real* Bali. Try for a hotel overlooking the gorge--incredibly peaceful and beautiful.

I have been several times to Bali. Agree with above comment -- Kuta is awful. If you can afford it, the Aman resorts are fabulous. Also fabulous is the Four Seasons, Jimbaran and many of the hotels in Nusa Dua. The Nusa Dua properties are also reasonably priced. These are on the water, but inland Ubud is the cultural, artistic center of Bali with some beautiful places to stay. You will love Bali and you will feel very safe and peaceful. Have a wonderful time.

We are just back from 12 days in Bali, including the election period. The street demonstation was confined to Denpasar area, while around Ubud some roads were blocked by downed trees. At no time was there any of the sort of the Violence pictured on CNN in Jakarta.
As a Calfornian I am used to white sand and mostly clean beaches. This is not the case in Bali altho Amet in Eastern Bali has good snorkeling. I think there are better places in the world for beach life. The richness of Bali is in its spiritual traditions. Ubud & environs is the area to see these.Email me with questions.

Hi Jill,
Was in Bali for our honeymoon in September. Stayed at the Ritz Carlton - wonderful 5 * hotel in Jimbaran. Far from the madding cry of Kuta. Most of the better hotels are compound style adn extremely safe adn security conscious. The Balinese are a wonderfully friendly people and the attention and pampering we received was second to none.
Enjoy !
