Bali in July with no AC

Looking at cheap hotels in Sanur for July, it appears that I can save a lot of money by staying in a place with no AC.

But, is this a good idea?

I am in my mid-20's, a guy and by myself looking for some rest and relaxation after a very tough 6 months or so with my job, so I really need to relax.

But, I wanted something cheap. I would like something for around $20 US a night in Sanur. Would love AC, but I don't see anything with AC in that price range.

Any suggestions?

How tolerant are you of heat? I know I wouldn't be happy with no AC in Bali, though if the place you are staying catches the breezes off the water and you are accustomed to hot weather you might be ok.

Given the current economic climate, I would think that rates would be negotiable. You might check over on Thorntree and see if anyone has any specific recommendations.

agree with kathie, cheap = uncomfortable nights sleep so not much relaxing going on.

I like aircon for sleeping on the beach, not just because of the heat but because of the salty humidity and bugs. Several million souls manage to do quite well without it, though. In fact most Indonesian don't like aircon at all. After a few days you adjust, but you need to make sure that you have a reliable mosquito net.

i can't imagine any place in SE Asia w/o a/c.... a cheap place is likely not to have good ventilation either....and the bugs....we leave our a/c on all the time in bali and keep all the windows closed because of the bugs and there are millions...

June / July are the coolest months of the year in Bali - their Winter . Humidity is at its lowest and there is generaly a mistral breeze off the sea at this time . You will be fine . But it is still hot during the day . I have sat at night and shivered in the breeze - but not always .

I found when I did this , years ago and later in the year , that an electric or ceiling fan was all that was needed .I agree about a net and buy some mossie coils from Bintang supermarket or just bring them from home so you have themn from day 1 .

Yep, June/July shouldn't be so bad and especially seeing as most places without A/C usually have ceiling fans.

june/july is cooler, but its still plenty hot....coolness is a relative term...

rhkkmk , don't get me wrong - I always have air conditioned comfort unless it is not available . I like to come in from the beach /touring / shopping and cool down .

But of course those who stay a long time soon adjust and often do not want air con .

I omitted to mention that in a recent email newsletter on www.balidiscovery.com it was recommended that we all have rabies vaccination , if not already vaccinated , if travelling to Bali .

There has been an outbreak there , at least since late 2008, and a significant number of cases diagnosed and some deaths , the latter where treatment was not undertaken by locals .

Apparently stores of vaccine are very low pending a new delivery and thus vaccination is highly recommended before travel.

It arises from bites from dogs and / or monkeys . Caution is therefore necessary if going to the Monkey Forest or if coming into contact with dogs . The governemnt had embarked on a program of destroying stray dogs on or around the beach at Seminyak as the dogs are the main carriers .

So whilst not wanting to be a Jonah I suggest you check any Foreign Affairs web sites as to health warnings etc and be cautious .

My apologies. I said this latest information was on the balidiscovery web site but my memory was wrong . I checked and in fact I read it in The Australian Newspaper on 10 June .
