Bali - immunizations recommended?
 

My husband & I are headed to Bali for 2 weeks in September. Vaccinations for Hepititis A & Typhoid are recommended - at a total cost of approximately $500 (for both of us including the required consultation). I've traveled to Asia before and have never had vaccinations and am inclined to pass this time as well but I'd like other opinions. We are in our early 60's and very healthy.

It sounds like you know the answer to the question, you just don't like the answer.

Both Hep A and typhoid are food and waterborne illnesses. No matter how careful you are, you have no control over who handles your food or how carefully they wash their hands. Many people would say that you should have the Hep A vaccine just to stay at home. There are plenty of Hep A outbreaks in the US.

Are you sure it would cost you $500? Your primary care provider should be able to give you both of these immunizations. And while I expect you will be required to pay for the typhoid vaccine, the Hep A vaccine might be covered by your insurance.

Also, lots of pharmacies are now offering travel immunizations for lower costs than the for-profit travel clinics.

For a short-term visit most places I think vaccinations are unnecessary. If I had to choose, I'd say Hep A is a good idea, generally speaking.

If you were planning to stay longer I'd recommend getting the immunizations in Bali, significantly less expense. I got a typhoid booster there and it cost almost nothing. But you won't be there long enough, unless you want to get them for future purposes.

Thanks! I checked our pharmacy and they offer both at half the price of the travel health center. I'll call our insurance co tomorrow regarding HepA. Either way - we'll get the immunizations - well worth the peace of mind. I really appreciate the advice.

Just for anyone else who might read this thread, I'd note that CVS Minute Clinics have Hep A vaccines for $139.99 and insurance is accepted. Those travel doctors are super expensive! Have a wonderful trip.

Yes our insurance covers 100% of the HepA vaccine offered through our pharmacy (RiteAid). We will also get the typhoid pills there - the series will cost $68. Wow - what I thought would cost us $500 is now less than $150 (total for both of us). Great advice from fodors. I hope others read this and also benefit.
