As far as I'm concerned, if one truly wants to experience Balinese culture, you will never find it at the 5 star resorts at Kuta and Sanur. You only really find it in the mountains, in Ubud, as the Balinese consider the mountains to be holy (hence they build their temples there-such as Besakih Temple) and the water to be profane. That was good enough for me. I stayed for 3 weeks at the Ubud Inn on the Monkey Forest Road in 1986. I could have stayed there three years. It seemed everyone was there, writers, artists, travelers in search of themselves-recent college grads.... I just looked up the Ubud Inn on the Internet-it's still there- and still lovely. $68 for a superior room. It was $15 dollars back in 1986. The porch looked out on the rice paddies, and every morning I would watch the farmers with the parade of ducks behind them, looking for hand-outs. The stone guardian demon above my doorway got a lovely red hibiscus every morning as an offering. So lovely. I cannot imagine going from one 5 star deluxe resort from another to Asia, those that do miss so much...
Sayonara for awhile-have been invited to speak at an international symposium in London that is very much concerned with what we discuss here on these forums every day.....
