if you're looking for a low key experience, we loved ubud (fantastic shopping, great restaurants) and on the far east coast we stayed in the fishing village of amed. lovely people, great food (the fish in the restaurants in literally right off the boats) clear water, some coral, dark volcanic sand, very special.

Lyd...where did you stay in Amed?

Besides enjoyong the beach you should plan to take a few day trips to the main island highlights. Usually the hotels will have a tour desk where you can arrange these. We found that a private car and driver/guide was the best and economical at about $50 per day per car. Our guide was Manwabi. One route would be the central shopping area including Ubud and the mountain (forget some names), another the eastern side, and one to the north coast. Be sure to include a visit to a Barong dance theatre and the Legong Dance preferably in the evening in Ubud. Kecak or Fire Dance is also worth it. It is the gentle nature of the Balinese people and their arts as much as the beautiful scenery that make Bali such a special place !
Bon Voyage.

i would second the hiring of a car...getting from one place to another is not easy alone

Yes, definitely hire a car and driver. Don't drive yourself. It's not easy getting around without a car. I stayed in the heart of Ubud, so that I wouldn't have to be totally dependent on a car since there were lots of things I could walk around and observe in Ubud. Happy Travels!

I'll go through my files and get the name of the Amed hotel/bungalows. The 2-story bungalows on the beach were wonderful!
