Back up plan to trip to Nepal- where else in Asia to go?
 

we are headed to Nepal on Sunday, should the post elecion days turn ugly and violent, I am trying to find a back up plan for the vacation. We'll travel through Singapore and will have 4,5 weeks allocated for the vacation.
We like nature, swimming, bit of culture. Where would you send us in case we need to change the plans in the spot?

I, too, am watching the Nepal elections with great interest. We're planning to go in October, so while we may need a plan B, we have a while to decide.

As I remember, you haven't been to Laos or Cambodia/ With 4.5 weeks, you could do both. Viet Nam is another option.

Have you been to Indonesia? You could put together a fascinating trip. I highly recommend central Java, and you could have some time on Bali as well as perhaps Sumatra. One of our regular posters, Marmot, lives in Jakarta and could offer many suggestions.

Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bali good to visit in mid April to Mid May?
I have been watching the Nepal situation for long time, was getting reasuring information, that tourist are always looked after and safe, yet... one should be realistic and have plan B.
It seems you have been to Indonesia- what would you recommend there?
How about Thailand- it's probably not very good time?

It is true that April is the hottest time of the year in Thailand. But it's a wonderful place to visit - so much to do and see. In 4.5 weeks you could visit a couple of places in Thailand and take a sde trip to Luang Prabang Laos and/or Siem Reap, Cambodia. This would be an easy trip to plan, as there is good tourist infrastructure in this area and lots of info about it on this board.

If you opt for Indonesia, you'll want to spend some time on Bali. It is the only Hindu island in Indonesia. It has beaches, but the magic for me is in the mountains and terraced rice fields. It's a popular destination, and you'll find lots of infofrmation here. If you want lovely beaches, I'd hop over to Lombok which is much less touristed.

Central Java (around Jogjakarta) is another place to visit. Borobudor, the largest Buddhist monument in the world is there and it is stunning. There are also the Hindu temples of Prambanam as well as those on the Dieng Plateau. Lots of fascinating local culture to experience and beautiful crafts. (If Nepal doesn't work out for us, central Java is one of our plan Bs).

I'm also reading everything I can about what is happening in Nepal. I notice you are posting on Thorntree which I think is a great resource as there are people posting who are curently in Nepal.

Yes, Boleslav went to Nepal. I've seen posts from him (under the same name) on the Thorntree forum, and from everything I've read, they had a great time.

It took me a year to see this question, Katie is right, we went to Nepal, Everest region, did a trek from Jiri via Namche Bazaar and Three passes, incredible scenery. Took me a while to get adjusted at home after the majestic views.
