Baan Orapin unavailable, any other Chiang Mai suggestions?

Baan Orapin confirmed vedette's assertion that they require a 4 night stay. Since we don't have that much time, I could use a few other suggestions. I was looking at the River Ping Palace, Field Village, and Romyen Garden Resort, but they all seem to be far from the city. Is this typical? Is there some place in town that has some character and charm we might want to consider?

is this 4 nite minimum new? i do not recall seeing this before...

They said it was a high-season thing. I booked at Tri Gong Residence, which will likely be a far different experience.

How much do you want to spend? I thought River Ping was centrally located. Golden Cupids, Tamarind Village are other options.

Tri Ya Na Ros is another option. Very nice, although the rooms are a bit small. They're right outside the old city, in a relatively un-touristed part of town, but still very close to a lot of shops and restaurants.

My personal review of the hotel is here:

We'd like to stay for under $100 if that's possible. I also was looking at Fern Paradise- it looks interesting!

Am I correct in thinking that most of the
more traditional "Lanna" style places to stay are outside of the city? How easy/difficult is it to get into the city if you stay on the outskirts in the evening?
