Ayutthaya is open for tourists (Dec 22, 2011)
Since I asked about this at the beginning of the month, I thought I would update anyone else who is considering an excursion to Ayutthaya--we went today and all the areas were open except for one; though you can still pull into the parking area and view the temple ruins. That one is still too unstable from flooding and will likely remain closed until repairs are made after high tourist season (May, 2012)
We had a terrific day with Jerry from Tour with Tong, I highly recommend his guide services.
The flooding devastation is apparent on the drive from Bangkok. The rice fields are still flooded and muddy even though they should be lush and blooming this time of year. It was a reminder that the floods effects will be felt long after all the water has receded.
We're having a wonderful time here in Thailand--thanks for all the help in our planning, Fodorites--a trip report will be forthcoming after the trip.
