Ayutthaya day trip/Cruise

I am going to be spending 6 days in BKK next month and reading my Luxe guide it suggest the Ayutthya day trip with the Shangri -La (going by coach and returning by boat with Lunch)
This will be my third visit to BKK.
My question is has anyone done this trip and if so is it any good? I do have Tong booked for one day (i am going to make merit early a.m) but would Ayutthaya be something i could do with her? (although its the return by boat that interests the BF and i)
We just thought it may be nice to get away from the shops and see another bit of Thailand.
Is A worth the day trip?

Another question, anyone got advice on the best night to go to Bed supperclub? need it be a weekend or is any night good?

Many thanks
Smeagol

Yes i have done the ayutthya trip before. I suggest you take the coach up and the river cruise back. It is a very relaxing day and you visit the old palace at Bang pa as well as some ruined temples.

It's been years since I did that Ayutthya trip. It's very pleasant. I don't remember where else you are going this trip, but if you are going to Angkor, skip Ayutthya.

We went to Bed on a weeknight, as we wanted more food options. Really, I think any night is good.

Wonder how long it will take for the renovations that will have to be done to repair the damage caused by the flooding?

Oh my didnt even think of that.
Hope all is well!!

WE are not going to Angkor so would the visit still be worth it?

I haven't been to Ayutthaya so I can't compare...Others seem to report it's certainly worth seeing unless you're doing back to back with Angkor Wat.

It seems you might want to wait till it's a little closer to your time to go and check with Tong to see what the situation is and then decide.

If not, a trip to the "secret place" might work out for you, as I'm sure it won't be a secret anymore once Andy and Bob get back! :)

WHAT and where is the "secret" place???

Kathie Oct 19th, 2006 01:53 PM

If we told you it wouldn't be "secret."

Back to the question of Ayutthaya. We did it on our own by taking the train from Bangkok. We found a room at what seemed like the nicest place in town, the Kungsri Hotel. We rented bicycles and rode around to the different sites, using a guidebook and information we found at the very helpful tourist office. We really enjoyed the place. It was a sort of warm-up for Angkor Wat, not so overwhelming, but very interesting.

I went by bus, rented a bike, drove around, and came back on Orient Hotelīs lunch cruise. Very nice way to look at life on the river banks.

The answers to your actual questions are yes, many people have done this day trip and it is a pleasant way to spend a day. Bus up, visit a few sites including the summer palace and then a 3 hour boat trip back with a buffet lunch. I'm sure the S-la trip is a decent one. I would not do this with Tong.

Of course Giant Pandas have large mouths. However, nothing near the nabob of Needham.

Enjoy your day out with Bob, might catch up with you guys on the 25th..
