Ayutthaya

Our tour to Thailand includes a stop at Sukhothai. Should we make an effort to also see Ayutthaya on our own? Thanks!

Yes! It's well worth it, but you would be better with a guide. We were also told that it was better to see the Grand Palace in Bangkok first as it will help you to visualise what it would have looked like.

I would possibly say that if you've already been to Sukhothai, and you're on a tight itinerary then perhaps what Ayutthya has to offer isn't worth the whole day.

I think that Sukhothai is more visually stunning that Ayutthya. But both of are the same type of attraction.

If by chosing to go to Ayutthya you're missing the opportunity to do something else then do give it a bit more consideration.

____________________________ ___________
My Thailand Travelogue & Photographs
http://www.bangor.ac.uk/~fos007/fb2b.htm
Bangkok,ChiangRai,Phuket,Krabi,PhiPhi

Can anyone recommend a good tour for day trip to Ayutthaya ?

Veron Iam - One way to go to Ayuttya is to book a tour with the Oriental Hotel. In the morning you take a bus to Ayuttya then continue on to the Summer Palace. The return trip is on the river on the Oriental Queen. A good buffet lunch is served. There are other hotels that also arrange trips.

FYI, we just returned from Thailand and the Oriental was not operating their day trip to Ayutthaya. Not sure when it will resume. In its place we took the Shangri-la Hotel's day trip, which included a bus trip up, stopping at the summer palace, and a boat trip (which included lunch) back to the hotel in the afternoon. I personally don't think you should spend a day seeing Ayutthaya if you are already going to Sukhothai, though. Spend more time in the north (assuming you are visiting the north).

I only have one to day to visit Ayutthaya or Sukhothai, which place is better ?

I only saw Ayutthaya, but hear that Sukhothai is better.

I only saw Ayutthaya, but thought it was most enjoyable and interesting! We were lucky enough to be taken on the day trip from BKK by friends, who also made sure we had a dinner boat ride on the Chao Prya River in Ayutthaya. It was neat seeing the ancient ruins lit up at night, and all the while we were sailing peacefully on about a 40' rice boat all to ourselves (4 of us) with a wonderful Thai meal to eat. Yum!
