Attire and transportation

Any tips on suggested attire in Vietnam. Have not come across anything indicating what would be considered to be appropriate (ie. shorts for women).

Also would like to hear any recomendations as to reliable means of transportation through the country ie. mini-bus, etc

That is funny you asked that question, because we are travelling to Vietnam in March and wondered the same thing about appropriate attire. Let me know if you hear anything.

We went to Vietnam/Cambodia last July (hot, hot, hot) and we wore shorts and sleeveless shirts. On the days we visited temples, we wore long pants (or skirts) and covered our arms.

We loved VN, the people are wonderful and the country is beautiful!

Sandy

So often travelers wear what they would wear at home.

In general, in Asia, DO NOT WEAR SHORTS! It is considered to be underwear.

Women whould try to wear a loose skirt or 3/4 length pants. You can always buy these styles locally for very low cost.

Women should cover their shoulders- by wearing a T-shirt. Though you will see people wearing other clothing, if you are truly concerned with local politeness and decorum, try to dress modestly the entire trip.

I don't want you to think we were disrespectful and rude . . . we always try to respect the customs of the countries we visit.

We asked our guide what we could/should wear and he told us it was perfectly OK to wear (long) shorts and sleeveless shirts at anytime EXCEPT when we would be visiting temples.

In Vietnam, we saw some locals wearing shorts and in Hong Kong, we saw lots of Asian men and workers in skimpy shorts and those sleeveless white undershirts.

Hi Rich,

What time of year will you be in VN? We spent 3 1/2 wks touring in Jan 1999. At that time of year it was cool. I often wore a sweater, and long pants, and even a nylon jacket.

We toured from the Mekong Delta in the south to Halong Bay in the north, with a side trip, of fthe main highway, to Dalat. We travelled by van, with a driver and guide. We stopped at many beaches and non-touristy sights. No matter how you cut it, driving in VN is horrendous - dangerous and slow. We saw many accidents, including overturned buses.

Would I go again. DEFINITELY!!!! it was the trip of a lifetime!
