ATM's in Vietnam?

The only previous posts I could find on this subject were quite out of date. Does anyone know about the current availability of ATM's in Vietnam? We will also be in Angkor Wat (Siem Reap)---are there still none at all in Cambodia?

There are ATMs in the major cities in VN. The limit per withdrawal is usually 2 million dong, about US$125, but you can make multiple withdrawals per day, if needed. There are no ATMs in Siem Reap.

I've only been to Vietnam once (a year ago) but I didn't see many. Yes, there were a few but I wouldn't think of them as here in the US or Europe where they are everywhere.

Plan accordingly.

I just got back from Cambodia and Vietnam last week. There are ATMs in all major cities and tourist destinations in Vietnam (except I don't know about Sapa)and none as far as I know in Siem Reap.

Thank you!

Bumping for an update. I am going to Vietnam in three weeks. Anybody been since 2004? How is the ATM situation nowadays?

My son lives in Saigon and ATM's are available - but the charge is fairly steep. I think it is $6 per withdrawal and you are limited to a relatively low amount per withdrawal

Thanks, Pam. Appreciate you checking with your son. Maybe I will bring more travelers checks than I was anticipating. I had pretty much abandoned taking travelers checks in the past few years but maybe this is a trip to begin taking them again.

The charge for the use of an ATM is more related to what your bank charges than to what the VN bank charges . The VN banks charge US$1-2 to use ATMs. All the ATMs I used allowed 2 million dong withdrawals, though I understand ther are some with 1 million dong limits. They are all posted clearly.

Thanks, Kathie. I will be using a credit union ATM card which has no charge for ATM withdrawals. My question was mainly on how common it will be to find ATM's. We will be mostly in cities, Saigon, Hoi An, with day trips to other places.

In the cities, you'll readily find ATMs. In the countryside and smaller towns I've heard that there are incresing numbers of ATMs, but I wouldn't count on finding one.

Enjoy your trip!

Are there any ATMs in Saigon airport.

divediva Oct 17th, 2005 04:14 PM

i am in Hanoi right now...plenty of atm's. like kathie said...max 2 million dong...huge wad of bills so bring a larger wallet..
try to get your bills changed into smaller currency when you can...we had dinner last nite $3 for 2 people in a local cafe and they could not change a 500,000 dong bill...($32.50) they server had to run down the street to get change.
