ATMs in Cambodia: do they exist?

I have read and heard it both ways: do they now exist in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap; has anyone seen them?

don't know about PP, but there were reports recently about 2 atms in SR

rhkkmk Sep 22nd, 2006 06:46 AM

for SR primarily you want american dollars

I saw but did not use "the" ATM in Siem Reap last February. I think someone recently posted that there are two there now and that there are several in Phnom Penh. The ATM's are not necessarily reliable and may not accept your particular card so go prepared with $US (small bills). The larger hotels take credit cards but most other places do not.

Two banks now operate international ATM's, ANZ (Australia/New Zealand Royal Bank) and Canadia Bank. Between them they have around 9 locations in Phnom Penh including one at the airport. There are a few in Siem Reap (two by the old market) but none at the old airport that I know. They may have put one in the new one though.

Yes, the airport in SR now has an ATM.

From www.state.gov Web site below. Take lots of US dollars!

The only ATM machines in Cambodia require a local account with the bank. Personal checks are not generally accepted. There are Western Union offices in Phnom Penh and one in Siem Reap to which funds can be wired. The U.S. dollar and Cambodian Riel are both widely used, although U.S. dollars are preferred, especially for larger transactions. Except in major hotels, credit cards are not widely accepted within Cambodia, although a number of banks in Phnom Penh accept Visa cards for cash advances. Bank and major hotels accept travelers' checks, but usually charge a service fee.

Umm, that is not correct. You do not need a local account to use the ATM.
I used the ATM at the Siem Reap airport to withdraw $$. No problems at all.
I believe it was an ANZ machine, which is not even Cambodian.

Used atms every day in Siem Reap in AUgust with no problems. New one at the airport also; don't need local account

When you use the ATMs in Siem Reap, what kind of money do they dispense- American dollars? Does anyone recall a service charge if you aren't a member of the atm banks? Thanks all

obersee, what you quote used to be true not so long ago, but it now needs to be updated.

Craig Sep 22nd, 2006 08:51 AM

Yes, the ATM's in Siem Reap dispense $US.

yes, the state department needs to update their web site! i'm relieved to learn you don't need a local account as well.

We used an ANZ ATM in Phnom Penh and got dollars no problem!

tatersalad Sep 23rd, 2006 05:43 AM

Obviously, things in Cambodia are changing very quickly. It does surprise me that the ATMs would provide US$ and not the local currency; very interesting. Does anyone know of a service charge?

Kathie Sep 23rd, 2006 09:28 AM

The reason that the ATMs dispense US dollars is that is the preferred currency in Cambodia.
