Jackie, take travelers checks, ATM's are not that readily available except in the big cities--Shanghai, HK, and we found the ones in Beijing either out of order or hard to find. You can always cash travelers checks at the service desk in the hotels where you are staying . Enjoy China, we loved it!

We didn't have any problem with ATM's in Beijing or Shanghai. Well not exactly true one in Beijing didn't ask if we wanted in English and so everything was in Chinese. Our guide was with us and he helped. No problem at any others. Didn't see any in Xian or Guilin.

I live in Shanghai, and you can't drive for more than 5 minutes before running across an ATM here. I once spent an HOUR in Beijing having the taxi driver take me all around in search of one, to no avail - I finally had to go to a hotel and get a cash advance off my credit card. The above poster is right, however, that all major cities will have major hotels with a cashier's desk that can exchange money, cash traveller's checks, or, if you're really desperate, do cash advances from your credit card!
