Asia Cup - Hotels Near Stadium?
We would really like to go to the Asia Cup to see Australia play. Looks like the tickets may be difficult to get, but we will be going anyway. Does anyone know of a good hotel near the stadium, or how transport works to get to it - Rajamangala Stadium, Ramkamheang Road Huamark Bangkok, Thailand
Thanks for any help! |
We did get tickets!
It seems the stadium is approx. 60 kms out of town. I think it may be best to try to get a guide to take us as apparently there is no public transport. Any recommendations? |
Rajamangala Stadium is NOT 60kms out of town, maybe 6kms, l'm not sure exactly but certainly nothing like 60kms :)
While it might not be situated in the downtown tourist areas of Bangkok there is no need to try and find accomodation close to the stadium. Don't bother with public transport as a taxi ride from somewhere like Sukumvit will be less than $10. If you're going to see Australia v Thailand then there will be a large crowd but capacity is only around 65,000 people. When the Thai national side played Real Madrid with Beckham and Zidane a few years back, even that wasn't a complete sellout. If you get a taxi then you will probably want to get out when you get to within a km. of the stadium and follow the crowds and walk the last bit. If you are going to the Iraq or Oman games then l'd be surprised if they even get 30,000 in attendance. After the game you might have to walk a bit to get a taxi but there are plenty of cheap food stalls and a few roadside bars where you could have something to eat until the crowd dies down and getting a taxi back will be easier. How much did you pay for your tickets, did you purchase online or in Australia? |
Thanks for your help! I have re-checked the site and realise I misread the distance to the stadium.
Sounds like you know Bangkok - any must-sees in your opinion? We bought the tickets online at http://www.thaiticketmaster.com/ We bought the 400 baht tickets, which is pretty good value at about $15 Australian each. Should be good fun! |
Are your tickets undercover? You only have the mid price tix and a lot of the stadium is not undercover so make sure you have a cap in case it rains and with kick -off at 5.20pm it's still going to be hot if you're out in the open.
A good overview of Bangkok attractions can be found on the following sites: http://bangkok.sawadee.com/ http://www.tourismthailand.org http://www.amazing-thailand.com/Bangkok.html Places worth visiting include the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun, Chatuchak Weekend Market, MBK (Mah Boon Krong) shopping centre, the Royal Barge National Museum and taking a boat ride on the Chao Phraya River, even a ride on one of the commuter boats is fun. Where possible, use the skytrain and subway to get around as traffic in Bangkok can be pretty bad. When using taxis always hail a moving one, not the ones waiting outside hotels, never use tuk-tuks in Bangkok and never ever buy gems. |
