>>>Friends who were in China about ten years ago tell me they would never return.<<<
(Well, would and will return - personal/professional reasons, to be sure.)
Thanks for the thread, and bringing back fond memories of wonderful (mutual) stares in the little ol' village of Nylam, Tibet. Mind you, we're going back to the 1980s and 90s, and some cherished Himalayan mountaineering expeditions. Most of us had the long hair/beard/bandanna routine going (particularly after ~ 10 weeks, 'up high'). Lovely warmth and graciousness from 'the locals'. (Particularly after various lodging, food, beverage and entertainment payments.) Will always love the 'higher' regions of Tibet (and Nepal).
Now, must confess the 'dirtiest' (and yet, rather sweet to me) stare I've ever received occurred in beloved Bangkok during the course of a week-long business trip. (We're going back a few years, during my 'single days'.) I was staying in my all-time favourite room in the Krungthep Wing of the Shangri-La, and had opened my door to see off an all-time cherished masseuse. As she started to sway down the hall in her little heels and lovely dress, a rather elderly and corpulent Caucasian woman - accompanied by a rather long-suffering looking male companion - was opening her door. The large white woman gave me the 'evil eye', entered their room, and then, bless him, her male companion gave me a little smile and a 'thumbs up'. (After giving the marvelous masseuse one last glance.) Yes, Bangkok business travel can have its heart warming moments.
Safe and joyous business/leisure travel to all of you, and do kindly consider flying SQ - thank you.
