Anyone travelled Hokkaido to Tokyo?

Hi
We plan this trip for September and are hoping to get some guidance as to a good route and stopovers over our three weeks.
We have been travelling to most other parts of Japan during our three previous visits.
We could rent a car where that helps get to interesting sights and plan to get a JR East pass for trains and take a bus where necessary. "old Japan" good food, great sights, temples etc. are our thing, though long hikes are getting a bit beyond us now, and we like budget accom. - Toyoko Inns can be a good answer sometimes...
Looking for those special out of the way sights and experiences and good ways to travel Tohoku and down....
Hope someone can help....information seems scarce about this area.
Cheers

I'll check into this for you. I have an associate who travels regularly between Tokyo and Hokkaido to visit his son and his son's in-laws. In fact he'll be over there at the end of September for a conference. So I'll ask him real quick if he has any recommendations for stops, though I think he uses the train most times.

Oh and visit an apple farm near Towadako. We passed a few on the way from Aomori to Towadako. The fresh Fuji apples are so juicy and sweeeeet oishi!

Aloha!
