Anyone else starnded by BKK closure with a travel insurance claim?

I am looking for anyone who may have been caught up in the travel mess in Thailand in December 2008 who was stranded there as I was. I filed a claim with my insurance, AIG Travelguard for trip interruption/delay/cancellation. They have denied my claim after telling me on the phone that the expenses incurred would be covered. I wasn't even in Bangkok-I was in Phuket, trying to get to Cambodia.
Has anyone else had shoddy treatment from this company? And they just received billions of dollars of bailout money from US taxpayers, which I am one of.

I've used the company for years and had to file a claim once, in 2005. The first time I filed it, they denied it, but then I had it reworded and I resubmitted it and then it was approved. Happy Travels!

Oh, what is the reason that they are giving you for denying the claim? Happy Travels!

I think there are some posts on the tripadvisor board about this - you might want to do a search on the thailand forum. Not sure if it is the same ins co but definitely posters talking about claims

Some travel insurance specifically excludes anything caused by civil unrest. They shouldn't back down on something agreed verbally, though.

The reason they gave was civil unrest. I also claimed terrorism and provided news articles about bombings and shootings, but they said that neither the US or Thailand labeled it terrorism so Travelguard won't accept terrorism either which is covered. I told them the civil unrest was in Bangkok, we were in Phuket, and they said civil unrest anywhere in the whole country counts. If that's the case, there is no where you can go where there isn't some civil unrest going on. Look at Europe now-Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, etc.

followup:
After Travelguard denied my claim I filed a complaint with the Missouri State Insurance Commission against them. About 2 weeks later I get a call from Travelguard telling me they have reversed their decision and will pay on my claim. I asked why they changed their minds and was told it is a "business decision" after receiving the Missouri complaint. I don't have the check yet but the web site shows it has been issued.

Good for you, susie. It seemed to me they needed to pay the claim.

That's how many insurance companies increase their revenues--Rejecting a claim they would normally pay with the hopes that you are too confused to pursue it. I think these people should be hanged.

The squeky Fodorite gets the grease. Glad to hear your persistence was rewarded. This is exactly the type of situation that Travel Insurance should cover. Why else would one buy it?

Good for you. I fought my rejected claim a few years back and it got reversed and they also ended up paying. Happy Travels!

These insurance companies count on normally passive American sheeple to just accept whatever they say without putting up a fight. The vast majority of people would go along, but not me.
