At SJ, I'd expect you could get them for US$100.

Thanks Kathie, I am now going in search at a loup, to see if any local jewllers have one although I think I maybe better going up to Hatton Garden.

I'd really like princess cut sapphire earrings set in white gold - cornflower blue. I hope that is a feasible request?

I will do another search. My Thailand tips folder is getting rather large which is great.

patsey, SJ has lots of loose stones. You may want to look at loose stones and have them make the earrings you want. They will deliver to your hotel.

If you're only looking at smaller stones, you don't especially need to look at the stones with a loup. I only do so when I'm buying a large stone (over a carat or two). SJ is a reputable jeweler and you won't find any fakes. Nonetheless, educating yourself about sapphires before you go will mean you are a much better informed buyer.

i think part of the fun of having jewelry made in bkk or anywhere is sitting down with the jeweler and opening one of those paper packets of stones and spilling them out on the counter and going through them to pick the ones you want....we usually defer to the jewelers eye for the matching, although sometimes we have found a stone or two that we particularily like....we have even done it with very small stones....its amazing how different each one is....slightly different shape, color, etc...
my cost estimate was just a guess...it could of course be more or less depending on the quality of the stone (s) and the design and workmanship necessary for the setting....the setting on K's larger saphire earings is quite detailed..

Great! Thanks. Oh, does SJ jewelers or any of the other jewelers mentioned have amber? A friend wants amber set in silver. I do her jewelry shopping when I'm in Bangkok and this year she wants amber. Happy Travels!

Ok, as long as we are resurrecting this thread, my wife Jeane is interested in saphires but likes jewelry that is bold - not gaudy (we're from New England, that's not allowed) but necklaces, bracelets and and earrings that "make a statement". I have already suggested to her that she find some things that can be copied. However, I am wondering if SJ or any other places in Bangkok do ready made saphire jewelry and have this type of thing on display and are they available at those great prices?

Guenmai, I don't remember any amber, but that doesn't mean they don't have it. Why not call them when you are in Bangkok and ask?

Craig, SJ has many different styles of jewelry ready-made and on display. Still, if your wife has something specific in mind, take along a photo or magazine ad or drawing or whatever and work with them. I found their prices for custom-made jewelry to be excellent. (It doesn't cost anything to look...)

craig another place to look is in peninsula plaza...there are several stores there with eye catching jewels...some over the top and not appropriate for NE, but some that may work for you...

amber...we saw some this last trip...was it laos??? bkk??? i'm sure that it is available in bkk some place...it is not listed in the index of treasurers and pleasures....how about asking nancy chandler's office...i find them very helpful answering e mails of this sort....

lots of it is fake of course....

gaysorn plaza is another good shopping place in the same area for jewels...and of course most of the larger hotels...sh-la, penn has one shop i think, ROS (ugh), hyatt, 4 seasons to name a few....

pictures or hand sketches are the best for the jeweler to work from....we have taken pages from tiffany's catelogs and the piece has come back exactly the same...

lim silver near the oriental is good for silver but not sure if they do custom..they could refer you of course...
