Antimalarial alert: generic Malarone now available

A generic version of Malarone became available last week. My pharmacist says it can be somewhat difficult to get right now.

I filled my prescription for Malarone on Monday and paid the name brand drug copay, $40, Cheryl filled her the next day and paid the generic copay, $10.

If you are going to be getting Malarone for an upcoming trip, you might let your pharmacist know that you are willing to wait a few days for the generic if they don't have it in stock.

Hi Kathie,
I am assuming we need to take Malarone for Mirak U, but what about at Inle Lake and Bagan? I believe the CDC website indicated it was not necessary for Yangon and Mandalay. Correct. Thanks for the heads up on the generic Malarone. I have not hit my drug deductible, so I will be paying the full amount, and I remember it was expensive from previous trips.

The highest risk place you will be visiting is Mrauk U. In the cities of Yangon and Mandalay, the risk is low. There is risk at both Bagan and Inle. My notes from last trip indicated that I got bitten at both Bagan and Inle (I'm apparently very tasty and even using deet, I always get a few bites).

I have a recent blog post about Malaria in Burma at travelindependently.com

great risk area info...

Good that Malarone has gone generic.

Doubt it will beat my WalMart Generic Doxycycline 100 mg scrip

#270 for $12... awesome value for budget.

Great news! The folks on the Africa board would probably appreciate this info, too, if I might suggest that you cross post.

Think of how much money you could have saved had you waited two weeks! Enough for a massage or two in Bangkok.

Any good reason not to wait and buy it in BKK?

Yes, absolutely the best reason: malarone is not available in Bangkok.

Glad to know for next time, that is for sure. And to think of the hassel we had to go thru with the insuance co. to get them to even partially pay b/c there was no generic.

I'll stick with doxy due to side effects with Malarone, generic or otherwise - thank you very much...
