Another “first trip to Japan” itinerary thread!

Hi all,
We have 2 weeks in Japan in June/July and our dates and flights in/out are fixed due to DH’s work commitments over there. I’m meeting him out there and the first draft of our itinerary is as follows. I’d be grateful for any feedback on whether it ‘works’ or we’ll be rushing around too much. As background, we’re in our 40s, no kids, and happy to travel independently rather than on tours.

22nd June - arrive in Osaka
23rd June - Hiroshima (possibly heading over to Miyajima if I have time)
24th June - travel to Kyoto and meet up with DH
25th June - Kyoto
26th June - Kyoto
27th June - Kyoto (day trip to Nara?)
28th June - travel to Kanazawa
29th June - Kanazawa
30th June - Travel to Takayama
1st July - Takayama
2nd July - Travel to Hakone, stay in Ryokan
3rd July - Travel to Tokyo
4th July - Tokyo
5th July - Tokyo
6th July - depart from Tokyo

Any feedback gratefully received!

Thank you.

It does work. It is a bit rushed. You could definitely spend more time in all of the stops you've chosen. You could cut 1 or 2 stops, but it depends on your travel style.

You could improve it by traveling to Kanazawa in the evening/night of the 27th.

Weather is going to be a factor, so you could spend some time at weatherbase dot com. I think that Kanazawa would be a stop to drop due to weather. Of course lengthening your stay gives you more opportunity for a good-weather day.

How flexible are you?
Your best bet is to move the trip to Hiroshima & Miyajima down so you can go there, then go through the Hokuriku area to Tokyo within 7 days - that would make a 7-day rail pass pay off quite nicely for you.
And definitely don't skip Nara.

Thank you both!

Great tip about changing the Hiroshima/Miyajima trip so we can maximise the 7 day JR pass. I’d previously just assumed we’d suck up the cost of the 14 day pass, This suggestion makes much more sense and saves £££ too - thank you!
