Amritsar Stay

Flying into Amritsar in January from Delhi for two days and plan to book at Mrs. Bhandari's but appears to be far from center of town and Golden Temple.Suggestions re:? better place to stay as well as places to eat. Retired couple who like some creature comforts and cleanliness as must.

a. You have another option in Ranjit Svaasa, a heritage property with beautiful suites, on The Mall. It is a bit more expensive than Mrs. Bhandaris. It is in the heart of the city (about 5 minutes drive from The Golden Temple), with large lawns, trees, in short the proverbial ‘old-world-charm’. Clean & comfortable, the food is good.
b. Mohan International is a modern deluxe hotel, on Albert Road & Ritz Plaza is on the Mall Road.
c. Near the Golden temple, 5 minutes walking distance, you have the ‘Bhaiyon Da Dhaba’ or Brother’s Restaurant, serving delicious typically ‘Amritsari’ food. The Indian cuisine is excellent & servings large.
d. Kesar Singh’s eatery is very close to the Golden Temple, but over the years seem to have declined in quality. These guys were originally from the famous food street of Lahore.
Happy Journey to the Mecca of the Sikhs!

Thanks for the suggestion:Do you prefer the Svaasa? Have read conflicting reports on TripAdvisor re: Bhandari,s

a. Svaasa is certainly more plush. The suites are spacious/comfortable & service is good. I have put up some of my European clients at Svaasa & they were very happy.
b. The 'original' two rooms (deluxe) situated by the side of the tennis court are very neat & tidy with aircondition. However, the rooms in the outhouse are indeed very noisy, as these situate next to a busy road. The food at Bhandaris is fixed menu & just like home food. It is without a doubt quite good. The 'Parsis' of India are very clean people themselves. The owner is a Parsi lady.
