Am I the most accident prone Fodorite?e
I am beginning to think I am. nearly 3 months into our RTW trip I have so far:
1. Hit my head on trunk lid of minibus whilst retreiving my back-pack in Hat Yao (Thailand)-- result, cut & dented head and (unwilling)star attraction for locals to point at. (Driver was extremely concerned that "he almost killed a farang!"
2. Been showered from above by welding sparks in whilst walking along the street in Bangkok - result minor burns and a feeling of, why me?
3. Been hit by a motorbike on middle of pedestrian crossing in Saigon (Vietnam)- result: gashed and bruised leg (and extreme anger!)
4. Slipped on a wet kerb and fallen headlong into the even wetter gutter, whilst avoiding a motorbike in central Hanoi (Vietnam) - result: bruised and humiliated
5. Tripped backwards over some stone blocks in Angkor Wat (Cambodia) whilst attempting to take the 'perfect photo" result bruises, grazes and again, considerable emabarrassment (but at least I didn't damage the camera!
This is just on this trip and does not include craking a rib whilst falling off a motorbike in Koh Tao, breaking a toe whilst getting out of a swimming pool in Egypt.
Do other Fodorites have similar experiences or is it really just me??

LOL! You are only the most accident prone Fodorite in Asia because I am not there right now!
I generally spend my time tripping from one site to the next. I often think the locals must wonder if I am able to walk upright and/or unsupported when I am at home.
I had grandmothers carry me up the steps of Angkor Wat because they couldn't stand to see me stumble about for much longer.
When my guide wasn't holding my hand to cross the street in Hanoi, the motorcycles would come to a screeching halt only millimeters from me, and the riders would cast me a foul look. This was in spite of the fact that I chose to cross beside a local, but I made the mistake of looking up, and froze.
Came away pretty bruised from Burma because I fell over on a boat, at that point I was focusing on trying to land on the deck and not in the water...
I could go on and on. You have nothing to worry about Crellston

I fell down one step on my first full day in Japan, severely sprained my ankle, fractured my fifth metatarsal and had to return home to NYC two days later. This was back in November and only now am I starting to get back to regular activities......

Eeeekkk----sorry to hear about your accidents.
I think I would qualify as a runner-up in the accident prone Fodorite category.
How is this for a bimbo accident: New Years Eve (day, pre-cocktails) I am walking through Banana Republic when I slip and fall. My left hand goes down to stop my fall...my right hand (holding a very heavy platter from pottery barn) swings over and hits by middle finger of my left hand....blood everywhere, all over the shoe section of Banana Republic, while I am standing there holding up my broken middle finger.
Pretty dumb, hunh?

Perhaps we could have a contest. Winner gets treated at Bumrungrad.
Really, I am surprised that we don't hear more reports of Fodorites getting hit crossing streets in Saigon or Hanoi.

And I thought I did badly! At least mine were on different trips.
Istanbul, Turkey - tripped on restaurant stairs, damaged right ankle - hospital put a cast on and I hopped around on crutches for the rest of the tour - have you tried using a squat toilet putting weight on only one foot? I had to cancel the Greek part of the trip as I was the designated driver.
Murren, Switzerland - tripped over curb while looking at signpost and broke my left wrist. That time I canceled the whole rest of the trip and my medivac insurance got me home.

thursdaysd - was that a different foot problem than the one you wrote up on the Europe board - the broken foot tour?
I can't imagine how you could travel with crutches. I was on them for almost two months and couldn't go further than a block....
We all need to look where we're going a bit more ;-)

Mara - no, same foot, different problem! The sore foot tour one was the result of an idiot in a Honda making a left turn when he should have waited. I T-boned him at 40-45 mph - he was lucky I wasn't in an SUV.
The only reason I was able to travel on crutches was because I was with a tour group - they helped with my luggage and let me sit at the front of the coach. A couple of times the guide rustled up a wheelchair, but mostly I hopped. Since it turned out the crutches were designed for someone taller, it was distinctly painful at times.

thursdaysd - Wow, you must be really tough! My issue with crutches was I have a torn rotator cuff and my arm ached all the time when I was completely non-weight bearing. I can't imagine having to use them day after day while sightseeing....

Mara - no, just determined! But I don't think I could do it now - my previously-broken wrist wasn't happy with it this time - I was SO glad when I got an air boot instead. But using crutches at all with a torn rotator cuff sounds just impossible! Hope it's better now. Did you have to have surgery?

Wow! I'm going to stop complaining about our car crash in Ireland last summer. Of course...who doesn't have at least ONE crash in Ireland. The cops working ours had been to 5 in the last hour and were being called to 2 more while working ours! Totalled the car, but thankfully the hubby and I escaped with minor injuries. The best part...I have a nice scar on my hand to remind me of how good it is to be alive...and a cool story to go with it.

thursdaysd - after four months the first two of which my foot was non weight bearing, in a cast or shoeboot and on crutches, I am just about better although I still go to physical therapy to work on my ankle strength. As I started to bear weight the pressure was off my shoulder even with the crutch and it seems a lot better. No, I didn't need surgery for my foot - maybe eventually for my shoulder but I don't think so...
I could just imagine what trouble I would be in if I rented a car in Ireland - Oy!
