Alternative destination to Bhutan
 

Anyone here travelled to or researched Arunachal Pradesh in NE India or other North Eastern States such as Assam or Meghalaya.

Places like Ziro & The Tawang Monastery & surrounding areas sound breathtaking (according to Footprint India)and are much less costly to visit than Bhutan. Hoping to fit in a trip from Siliguri to Shillong then up to Tawang.

Looks like there are flights & buses but would appreciate input from travellers who've ventured to these areas of India.

I'm heading that way in March-April 2007.

We are hearding to Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet sometime in June, July OR August, we have not yet decided but we are looking at having htis tour complany guiding us, and trying ot find out if they are reputable, soes anyone know.Here are there info.

I know that Bhutan is expensive, but having just returned from there, I can only beseech you to please GO! It's incredible and amazing and who knows how long it will be so!

Aside from Bhutan , have you gone to Tibet and Nepal on the same trip? We are looking to do this and so far the company is lsaying we should do it on our own I mean Bhutan? Did you use a guide or tour company for Bhutan and how long did you go and how much did it cost? Would like any information so we can make a decision.

It's in Assam, and looks great as an alternative to Bhutan.

Bhutan requires that you use a local agent/guide. Any foreign company that offers tours to Bhutan must also use a local company. The minimum cost is US$200 per person per day in Bhutan.

Must admit that previously I didn't know that much about Bhutan. But now my curiosity is rising. Why? Because over this past weekend we stayed at the Royal Orchid Sheraton in Bangkok, and the crown prince of Bhutan was also a guest there at the same time. By coincidence, our schedule was in sync with the prince's schedule, as we encountered him twice over the weekend. It was kind of exciting. After all, I've never seen a real prince before. He nodded and waved to the people in the lobby, and went over and spoke to an older woman. My brief brush with royalty!

albeny, we were at the Royal Orchid at the dame time. The prince was staying on our floor (28th). Someone told us they had cleared everyone off that floor for the prince, but they let us stay... who knows, maybe it was a perk for being a frequent guest.
