ALONE IN BANGKOK

Hello world travelers,

I'm planing to escape London craziness this Christmas and booked a ticket to Thailand. I'm going alone and would appreciate some help, guidance, advice.
I'm landing on the 26th of December about 4pm ( yes I'm flying on Christmas day :D) My plan is to spend 26-27-28 in Bangkok, book an early flight on the 29th to Koh Phangan until the 5th. I would like to visit at least one close island.
My biggest concern is what to do in Bangkok and where to stay ????
I want to visit a few touristic places :Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Flower market, but I would like to experience it the proper way, boat trips, local food, bars. A place where I can meet nice people from all around the world, not expensive but not cheep (apx £20-£30/ night, air con, own bath/ shower/ tv)

Where is the best place to stay? And what are the best things to do ?

Much appreciated,
John

Have a look around Banglampu area but on on Khao San road (madness). Staying in this area will put you close-ish to all the attractions you mentioned(Grand Palace, Wat Pho and sort of close to the Flower Market). Also puts you close to the piers for river trips, lots of local foods etc.

It's also in the price range you mentioned and as for nice people..well, I will let you be the judge of that.

Happy travels.

You are traveling at the absolutely most expensive time of the year. The lodging at the beach will be especially expensive, particularly because you plan to be there over the New Year. Expect Koh Phangan to be party central.

If you are looking to mix with the backpacker crowd, the advice above is perfect for you, as KSR is the backpacker area. If you would prefer to be away from the madness, I'd recommend somewhere else on the river.

Take a look at hotel booking sites like booking.com and agoda.com and also look at a local booking site, www.sawasdee.com For any of the sites, read the conditions carefully, as some rates are refundable, some are not.

Correction: Have a look around Banglampu area but _not_ on Khao San road (madness).
