I used Air Asia back in 2011 for both short (KUL-HKT, HKT-BKK,BKK-KUL) and longish (OOL-KUL, KUL-OOL) hauls. I had no issue with any of my flights.
The cost of insurance was trivial. Opted for a Malaysian meal on the long hauls. Prices and quality were better in comparison to the 'western' meals I saw.
I avoided the cc fee by using debit and pre-booked my baggage. I don't think the options would have added more than $30 per leg.
I wouldn't use long haul Air Asia X again because I believe comfort becomes exponentially more important with trip distance. However, would definitely consider Air Asia for short legs in and around SE Asia.
Note that back then they used Suvarnabhumi (BKK) rather than Don Muang (DMK).
