Just returned from India a week ago. I ate everything, including fruit, veggies, eggs, even mayo, and never got sick. I always drink bottled water, but I do that at home. I didn't have milk with cereal because I only drink skim which they didn't have, but I did drink plenty of chai. Obviously luck plays a role, but if I had to obsess over every little thing, I wouldn't go. The only thing that I did differently is I love my red wine, but I didn't drink at all on this trip. It was an extremely fun vacation, but it was also busy and I didn't want to be hung over or dehydrated. I personally think pacing yourself in the hot sun, getting enough rest (I took prescripton sleeping pills at night) and keeping yourself hydrated has much more to do with staying healthy than the food choices.

Dori, what part of India did you go to and what was the weather like at the end of March beginning of April?

I went to Rajasthan (Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and some smaller villages in between)from March 20-31. The weather the first week was beautiful. Cool mornings/evenings and warm sunny days. The last four days or so the weather was starting to really heat up, all day and night, but certainly nothing that I found oppressive if you paced yourself. In fact, the ceiling fans were adequate for my needs. April and May are supposed to be the two hottest months of the year, and you can tell the real heat was on its way. I thought March was a great time to go because I do like it slightly warmer. However, I think by mid April throughout May I would avoid if possible.

Dori, thanks for answering my weather question. I now have another if you don't mind. Did you find the Rajasthan area to be crowded during your visit? Is it high season during the time of your visit?

Austine, it is supposed to be high season, but I honestly have no idea what that means in India. The cities are always packed and full of chaos. Also I went with a small company (13 people) and many of the places we stayed, especially in the small villages, were just us and sometimes a few others. I never saw tons of tourists anywhere. We were at the Taj at around 6:30 a.m. and that wasn't crowded by any means either. We left at around 9:00ish in the morning and it still wasn't overly crowded. I think you will see more camels in India than you will ever see tourists no matter when you go.
