A word of praise for the Chinese...

I used ATM machines in China 100% of the time since credit cards were not accepted in the places I stayed/shopped or ate.

One time I accidentally left my ATM card in the Bank of China ATM machine in Suzhou. I didn't realize it until 7pm. Next day, I went back to the Bank of China and spoke to one of the teller's. After I gave her my name and bank, she said "Is this it?" and showed me my card. I filled out some paperwork pledging my first born as collateral and got my card back. Someone had found it and returned it to the authorities.

Of course it could not be used by a thief without a "pin" but I was very impressed. In this foreign country, a gazillion miles from home, this act of honesty and kindness was very much appreciated.

I too had a really nice experience in Hong Kong with an honest person going out of her way to do the right thing. I put some money into the ticket machine at the subway and the machine returned some coins as change. I inadvertently did not pick up all of the coins, and a lady ran after me to tell me I had left the change in the machine. She then handed me the coins. It was not a lot of money, but I was really impressed with her kindness and honesty.

This happened to my husband in Shanghai a couple of weeks ago and we were using the ATM in the hotel lobby - unfortunately we did not have the same experience someone took it and used it to order on line items. Luckily we only had 2 days to go!!!

It was a really nice hotel too so i was really surprised.

Darned, just when I was starting to have renewed faith in humanity...
I guess it is the luck of the draw, there are thieves and noblemen in every part of the world.
