A week in Singapore too much?
My husband and I are traveling to Singapore and Malaysia for business. We are planning on staying in Singapore and he is just taking a day trip to Malaysia for business and one day in Singapore for business. Is staying the rest of the week too much? We are thinking of going to Bali? Any suggestions??

it seems like a long time to me...
take a look at maleka in malaysia...you can take a lux bus there for a nite or two...we loved it.. bali is another option but the flight is a few hours each way...ubud would be my destination there |
I have no problem with a week in Singapore as I've been going there since 1998 and have spent as long as a week and a half at a time.
It depends on what you want to do. Singaporeans are really lovely people and I like to go about, relaxed, and meet people and not rush through some world wind tourist schedule. Plus, the food is great there and you could eat yourself into Euphoria for a week. Happy Travels! |
We recently spent 4 days in Singapore and could easily have stayed longer. No, I don't think a week will be too long.

i have spent more than a week in Singapore and there is plenty to do (especially if you like shopping- check out the newest mall Vivo)
there ae also loads of other things to do. Singapore is a geat place |
perhaps you will want to visit some of singapore's nature reserves to get away from city and malls at one point.
1.The Botanical gardens 2.Canning park While here go to Battle Box for a WWII bunker tour, then try to eat at Flutes at the Fort. If you feel like a strenuous trek in the jungle go up to 3.Bukit Timah Nature reserve 4.Changi village, then over to Pulau ubin island. Ask how to set up a visit at the reserve. To the north you have the 5.Sungei wetlands reserve where you can walk along a wooden boardwalk above the wetlands. Don't miss the Malay Heritage center in singapore. They have cultural shows on Wednesdays, but attendance must be booked in advance. It is very special and these neighborhoods offer some interesting souvenirs at better prices. We also enjoyed drinks atop the Swissotel/fairmount on the 70 th floor.(acros the street from Raffles hotel). |
There is plenty to do for a week. I've been to Singapore many times and there is always more to do and see and more places and foods to sample. If you get bored, you can take a couple of days to Meleka.
I really don't shop in Singapore, though some people do. There is plenty to do without shopping. |
cjaeger, Singapore and Bali are so completely different from each other that it's hard to advise you without knowing what your expectations are.
I like Singapore, but a couple of days does it for me; however, I've been there a zillion times. The first time I was there I could have easily filled up a 5 days. Bali offers a lot, but with less than a week you should pick one or the other. |
I would combine Sing and KL. Give Sing 2- 3 days tops its small. The remainder in KL.
|
LOL, Bill, we're all different. I find KL rather boring - there's enough for me for maybe 2-3 days, but I can always find more to do in Singapore!
|
I agree about Kuala Lumpur. I found it architecturally interesting, but boring. I stayed about 3 nights, I think it was and then quickly headed back to Singapore. Happy Travels!

It sounds like your husband has at least 2 days of business commitments, and you want to see something of Singapore (lets say 2 full days minimum, although 3 is possibly better), and I assume you are not planning on going someplace without your husband, so even with a “week” it sounds like you really only have 3 days left. So I am not sure I would travel, esp not to Bali for only 3 days. I love Singapore and have lived there, and think there is a lot to see and do, but don’t really know your interests, so it is hard to say if a week would be too much for you. If you want beautiful beaches, yes a week would be too much in Singapore. If you can list some of your interests, you might get more specific reccos.
If you don't want to stay the week in Singapore, a short hop nearby might be possible. So my first question would be what time of year are you travelling? If the summer, you could think about 2 nights at some of the nearby Malaysian beaches, or even Koh Samui in Thailand, (these areas are rainy in winter months but good from about early March through mid October.) You can take a bus or drive or in some cases fly in 1-2 hours to further points. If you can repost with trip dates, I can suggest reccos. Something like 2 nights would be nice and easier than flying to Bali for such a short time. Bali is wonderful but IMO you want a longer time than trying to do both S’pore and Bali in a week; however it is possible if you really want to do it. These would be just for beaches and snorkeling, as they don’t offer the cultural opportunities of Bali (which is why, IMO, it is pushing it to go to Bali for 3 days as you can’t see as much as you would want to. If you just want a beach, there are options which are closer like Malaysia. If you can leave the husband behind and go on your own, then 4-5 days in Bali would be better. (Assuming you want a few in Singapore.) Another very easy trip is to go up to Malacca for an overnight or two, interesting Portuguese colonial history and good food. You can take a bus or train or even rent a car and drive yourself. (About 5 hours any way you go.) Good weather in these months, rainier in the summer, but you aren’t going for beaches. You might even be able to coordinate one of the above with the day trip to Malaysia (which I am assuming is to Kuala Lumpur). That means you could join in on the day trip and see a little of KL. |
A week is way too long! I go to singapore every year and I enjoy it, but it is small country/island very focused on shopping. You can fill your time there-what many of the other post alude to- but you are in a great region of the world and there are places to see! KL is good for two days or so. I go there with my wife for business every year and it is a city geared for business. Enjoy it but no more than two or three days. Go to Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam! I have gone to all of them over the years with my wife on 'the rest of the week' type trip after doing business. Many will say that these trips merit much more time, but the reality is that you might not be back this way again and seeing a part of cambodia or laos or vietnam in three to four days is very enjoyable. I always see the country and enjoy the time and dont feel rushed. I hopefully then will return to the outstanding visits in the future.

I miss Singapore!!
One week is good, you do not have to rush, just plan one or two places in a day... and there are lots to eat... Shopping is great, although certain things are cheaper in Europe... When would you be going? |
My husband and I spent a week in Singapore last June and didn't see everything we had planned to see. We spent the second week of our trip in Bali.
I think everyone has had great input and basically what it comes down to it what you want to do with your time. There are plenty of great places close to Singapore, so you can definitely go and visit other places easily - or you can spend your time exclusively in Singapore and find plenty of great things to see and do there. I would hesitate to go to Bali for just a couple days though - the flight is a few hours, plus the time at the airport and travel to and from, you are looking at eating up the better part of a couple days just getting there and back. Shopping is definitely big in Singapore and we did spend the better part of an afternoon in a large mall while we were there - actually we weren't shopping, we ducked in for the AC and a snack and then had trouble finding our way out - it was the middle of the Great Singapore Sale, the mall was a crazy place, and we barely escaped with our lives - LOL. We are NOT big shoppers, so that was the extent of our time in a mall. I am still a bit shell shocked over the experience. Contrary to popular belief, there is A LOT more to Singapore than shopping :) |
I spent a week in Singapore in 2006 and it was fabulous... not rushed and I felt like I got to really see Singapore. I am going back this year, again for nearly a week. Highlights for me included.... the zoo, Night Safari, Afternoon tea at Raffles, shopping (!!!), and boat rides... I also enjoyed the fireworks at Sentosa Island. Singapore is a great place. Have a wonderful holiday.
