9pm-4am in KL

Hi,

am flying to Singapore via Kuala Lampaur in a few days. We are stopping in KL for 2 days on our way back to India.

However, the way flights have worked out, we land around 9pm and then our flight to Singapore is not until 6am the next morning.

is there anything we can do for those hours? i really hate the idea of being stuck in an airport for that long with nothing to do.. im flying Air Asia, therefore will be landing at the low cost terminal, which i guess means the terminal will be spartan.

any ideas, recommendations, options?

thanks,
cheers,
skinny.

sleep?

The airport is far outside of KL. I think your only options are to hang out at the airport or get a hotel room and get some sleep. Tune Hotel, which is very basic, is an inexpensive option. A recent poster gave it a scathing review, but a regular here, offwego, felt it was fine for what it was - a place to sleep between flights.

Kathie, your first word was exactly what I was thinking as I read the OP. :)

Having just been to KL recently I can attest that nothing happens overnight in KL at all. The city is virtually asleep.

I applaud you if you can pull an all-nighter.

ouch :( i thought id jaunt on down to the city and maybe just step into a pub or something...

i checked out the Tune hotel.. no vacancy. will i have to chew my arm out of sheer boredom?

There is a fancy Pan Pacific Hotel near the other terminal. I understand Air Asia has some special rates for that hotel which is otherwise rather expensive. Also try agoda.com to see if they have a good rate for it.

You could take a cab into town at least to see the Petronas Towers. Maybe go to the Sky Bar at the Traders Hotel? It should be open late.

A cab would take a good hour each way, and the cost is about US$50 each way, if I remember correctly. You cannot get into the towers that late, but you could go somewhere for a drink that has a view, I suppose.

I wasn't that impressed with the towers. The architecture is interesting, but I wouldn't spend two hours in a cab to see them. I guess tall buildings don't wow me. Others seem much more impressed with the towers than I am.

Budget taxis have a fixed rate of RM75 to get to/from the airport. That's like US$20. And given that they will be arriving late in the evening, there shouldn't be any trafic. It shouldn't take an hour. I would personally prefer to get out and explore instead of being stuck near the airport, but hey that's just me!

we landed a KLIA at 11am and it took abot 45mins to get to the centre of town.

The pan Pacific hotel is very nice. Outside pool, cafe, shuttle to airport and a nice Indian restuarant, but away form anything else. We have used it twice and found it very convient for just what you need. Look on the discount site for a better price.

So there is a budget taxi service serving the budget terminal? Interesting.

finally that airport has added a few amenities like a restaurant or two....even a mcdonalds....but i bet they close at night....there is no place there that i know of to be even comfortable....the a/c is not the best either...

you are in for a horrible night i am afraid.... one thought would be to find a driver and hire him to take you to a dead end street and sleep in his a/c for a few hours...

skinnylizard Sep 22nd, 2010 11:00 PM

hmm.. i looked into the Pan Pacific Hotel but its quoting $350 a night....

cant we take an express train into town have dinner and a drink and then head back to the airport on the train or bus?

i mean between 10-2. i dont mind spending, 3-4 hours at the airport but not 8...

Is your layover on a weekend? If so, SkyBar isn't a bad idea. It's open pretty late on weekends (3 AM, I believe)--but keep in mind that on weekends it'll be filled with more of a young, jet-set party crowd in the wee hours (if you don't mind that scene.)

Weekdays it closes at 1 AM.

The view is phenomenal.

I do agree it's an unnecessarily long trip back and forth for a drink or two--but if you're not going to get a hotel, driving in circles around KL might be more interesting than hanging out at an empty airport watching cleaning crews do their thing.

If you do decide to go there, definitely make a reservation ahead of time (most especially on the weekends)--it can get very busy.

i think i paid about $125 for pan pacific with the air asia discount program.... look for discounts on the PP website

Kathie Sep 23rd, 2010 07:47 AM

If your plane gets in at 9 pm, it will be 10:30 or 11 by the time you get to KL. I remember restaurants weren't open exceptionally late there, but the Sky bar should be.

And yes, taking the express train will be faster, but you have to go from teh budget terminal to the regular terminal to catch it.

rhkkmk Sep 23rd, 2010 08:03 AM

and that is quite far...maybe a 15 minute ride in the other direction from K/L...
