7 day suggested itinerary in Bangkok, Thailand with kids
Hello.
We'll be traveling to Bangkok this May 5-11th for the International Rotary Convention. I'd love to get some advice for what you might think is do-able with our 7 days in town. I've read many post stating that 3-4 days in Bangkok is sufficient so I'm curious what day trips would be an option for us? Our kids are 4 and 6 so an hour to 1.5 hour long trip time one-way would be about right for us I think? Also, any advice on what I could do by myself with the two kids for one or two of the days we are there would be much appreciated. My husband will be in his rotary meetings for some of the trip and I would like to venture out of the hotel during that time, just need advice on safe, kid-friendly things to do. I'm just getting started digging through all my tour books this week looking for inspiration and I'm hopeful some of you can offer advice? Thank you very much for your time!

A week in Bangkok is a nice period of time. I can never get enough time in Bangkok. Note that it will be very hot in Bangkok in May.
Probably the most important thing in planning this trip is finding the right hotel. I don't know if your husband needs to be in a particular hotel for his meetings. Of course, you'll want a hotel with a nice pool area. I think the two hotels with the nicest pool areas are the Anantara on the river and the Sheraton Royal Orchid. Both are located on the river, which gives you lovely views of the very active river traffic. I also find the river area to be slightly less hot and the air a bit cleaner than in the canyons of high rises.
I expect your kids will enjoy the public transportation - the water taxis and the skytrain. I'll let others suggest kid-friendly places to visit, but I'd note that you'll want to do as much as you can indoors. For instance, there is an aquarium in the Siam Paragon Shopping Mall.

I love Bangkok, though our kids always prefer the beach areas. Will you have the chance to get away from Bangkok for a few days?
The Krabi region is stunning and a few days on a beach would be only a cheap, hour long flight away.

As an addition to the activities in the link that I posted, my kids always loved time spent in the many "video arcades" in Bangkok.
The real bonus here is that they tend to be in the shopping malls so that you can combine some retail therapy with fun time and the games are really cheap. Most of the games are only 10 baht per play where similar machines in Australia take $2 coins per game.
The MBK centre has a good arcade on the top floor next to the cinema's. When my boys were younger, I would take them there for half an hour and then take them shopping with the promise of a return to the arcade if they were good whilst we shopped. They also loved the food court at MBK so it makes for a really good day out for the entire family.
Do also consider a guided trip to the floating and train track markets. My kids thought that this excursion was really "cool". Use a private guide instead of a bus tour so you can be flexible around the childrens needs.
A half day in Lumphini Park is another thing that my kids love. There is a lake with paddle boats and lots of playgrounds. It is a lovely oasis in the middle of the city.

Wow, some great advice, thank you all very much. I'm still researching and playing with our itinerary....I am a bit torn on staying in Bangkok the whole week or trying to arrange a flight to Chaing Mai for example.....still mulling it over....the more I read the more it seems you really could spend an entire week in Bangkok and find lots to do and see....thanks everyone for your tips/advice....
