Kathie, last year's venue, the Kepenski (sp), was full so Pook offered the St Regis as an alternative. You know him, he knows all the superior places, and even if the food was only so so, we would have a great time in their presence.

rhkkmk Dec 18th, 2016 01:06 AM

Brunch is complete, as in other venues, we closed the place. St Regis is a gorgeous hotel in a prime location-- next to the former Four Seasons.

As an added bonus Pook introduced us to Bill Heineke, the founder and CEO of the Minor Group, who own and operate many of the hotels we love. An expat American he has assembled a huge portfolio of businesses first in Thailand, then South East Asia and now many places around the world. Names you would know are Swenson ice creams, burger kings, sizzler pizza company-- all franchises in Thailand; Marriotts, Anantara, St Regis, Avani among other hotel names. We have always been pleased with his hospitality.

The brunch: First class all the way. Fresh French, USA and other oysters, caviar, raw lobster, cooked American lobster claws, sushi, sashimi, tiny sweet shrimp, hot grilled 1/2 lobster Thermidor, waggu prime rib (just for peter), pan seared fois gras, smoked salmon, smoked other fish??, breads, pastries, salads--green mostly, a room full of desserts--- just to name what I remember.

Free flow Moët Champagne...other champagnes for a slightly lower price... wines, etc.

We had a great time, drank way too much, ate delicious well served foods and can' t wait to return.

The price for 3 was about 11,000 B.

rhkkmk Dec 18th, 2016 01:17 AM

That is about $100. each with Pook's membership discount.

Do we have a preference of the 2 buffets? St REGIS room was quieter, less food choices than Kepenski but just as good if not slightly better quality, but not much

Serving area at St REGIS was smaller which we liked.

Staffs were equally accommodating and watchful, especially keeping glasses full.

Unknown to us Pook prompted them to bring us an anniversary cake, which we enjoyed.

A great day, with a GREAT friend.

Tomorrow is shoe day at Platinum.

FYI K is asleep on our sofa at 5:15PM.

50 years ago today at this time it had begun to snow as we left the church in Needham

rhkkmk Dec 18th, 2016 02:34 AM

BTW, the weather here in bkk has been splendid... the coolest we have ever had and by far the lowest humidity-- you hardly sweat.

We plan our next trip for all of December and into early Jan--2017-2018

<<<While I know many of you do not agree, I have to say how THRILLED Karen and I are with the shaping of our new government and we wish them...>>>

All the Trump man needs to buff up on are his Tweets before firing-off.....a proof reader might help!

Happy anniversary day! Spending your special day in Bangkok makes it awesome, whether you relax, go to the spa, go shopping, hang out at the pool......

Very happy to hear the weather report. We are all set to leave for Ohare on Tuesday night for our Wednesday flight ORD-PVG-BKK, crossing the Pacific in 1st class... :) on frequent flier miles.

I'm glad you are happily anticipating snow on your return. I can't wait to get out of the white stuff...I've had enough of it already!

Carol

rhkkmk Dec 18th, 2016 06:30 AM

Have a great flt carol, we will be reading along

Kathie Dec 18th, 2016 08:15 AM

Your brunch sounds great - thanks for the report!

rhkkmk Dec 18th, 2016 06:29 PM

A late nite bite to eat in our suite-- chicken nuggets child size for K and phat thai for me-- the best I have had so far.

The Penn is undoubtably the ultimate in luxuary iv every way. We could not be happier. Planning a return with Tab and her family for New Year's Eve next year. Made the room request today. Fireworks right outside our windows!!!

Off to shoe shopping

rhkkmk Dec 19th, 2016 02:49 AM

Omg, don't let the shoe police be on duty Tuesday at JFK.

OK so I bought 2 pair, but K......

Last fitting at thai silk this afternoon, final delivery to hotel by messenger tonight or tomorrow.

K's jewelry left at the jeweler will be delivered tonight about 7. New anniversary band to be mailed-- custom made.

Penn will only give us till 2 tomorrow for late check-out but our driver comes at 3 so no problem.

This has been a bit of a whirlwind trip but the weather and our activities were quite perfect.

Looking forward to Christmas Eve brunch with the whole crew at Tabitha's just one mile from us, followed by an overnight for K and myself (Maddie's request) at Tabitha's and a nice tenderloin roast which Chris will prepare and cook on Christmas Day.
We will enjoy seeing the Days on Xmas eve afternoon and they will enjoy being in their house on Christmas.

Our flt tomorrow is at 7:30 PM via Doha, Qatar to JFK with a transfer to Jet Blue to Boston--- home mid-afternoon tomorrow too.

We may ride the hotel boats down to the Anantara for lunch or just hang out here. K has not even been in the pool once. This suite and this hotel have made for a fabulous and festive celebration for us.

Next up Japan in late April followed by a trans-Pacific cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver.

rhkkmk Dec 19th, 2016 02:54 AM

Safe travels. Looking forward to hearing about your April trip/cruise plans next week in NYC.

Kathie Dec 19th, 2016 11:13 AM

Bob, we should be in town the end of May. Hotel prices will be sky-high, though, as it is the beginning of cruise season. It might be e fine time to use some hotel points. We look forward to meting up with you in Seattle. Safe travels home!

Maryalice Dec 20th, 2016 08:29 AM

Welcome home to the bracing Northeast, Bob and Karen, and, again, happy 50th! I need to comb through your recent threads to find your most enthusiastic recent restaurant reccos for when we go to Bangkok in January. We won't manage the sustained fine dining you folks do -- wow! -- but I would love to find at least a few special places for our 6 nights.

If you have any more observations or heads-up on conditions in Thailand during this period of mourning and anticipation of the new King's reign, please let us know.

rhkkmk Dec 21st, 2016 02:02 PM

got home just fine...well 2 exceptions--our driver's suv broke down near BKK, but he arranged for a p/u quickly for us; and I made our Jet Blue flt from JFK to boston for the wrong day...don't get old!!

Kathie Dec 21st, 2016 02:03 PM

Welcome home, bob & Karen!

rhkkmk Dec 22nd, 2016 05:47 AM
