5 star hotel Bangkok
 

Wondering what hotel to book. Am looking at the Sukhotai, Sheraton Grande, Plaza Athenee, Grand Hyatt Erawan. We want to be quite central to main sights and markets. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

All the above are terrific hotels. Plaza and Hyatt are in good locations on Sukumvit & close to Skytrain. There is a new Sofitel close by which is about to (re) open - not sure when but it will probably have some good rates when it does.

The Conrad on Wireless Road is a bit of a walk to the BTS but is my favourite, non riverside hotel.
On the River the Peninsula and the Shangri La are very good but a bit less convenient. The Oriental is als worth considering although a little too formal and staid for my tastes.

The Dusit Thani is an older 5* property and close to markets and some good restarants etc.

i love the peninsula too for a riverside location..

my stays at plaza anthanee have been memorable and the location cannot be beat....the four seasons is good too and the nearby st regis...

sheraton grande has lovely rooms and a walkout to the skytrain..

jw marriott is a very nice hotel as well..

conrad is a good choice and i really like the friendly staff there and their liu restaurant...

sukathai (sp) is a nice hotel but i don't find the location convenient and the same for the banyon tree...

the intercontinental is an older world style hotel also in the sukhumvit area...

My preference is always for a riverside hotel. The hotels on the river are more convenient to the Grand Palace and the major wats as you can get there by water taxi. The hotels in the Sukhumvit area are close to shopping, but not so close or convenient to the major sights.

The Hyatt Erewan is connected by ramp to the skytrain. That is a big plus! It is also in the middle of the major shopping venues in the city. You can walk to Central World, Paragon, Siam Discovery/Center by way of the skywalk (above the street, but just below skytrain level) which is much nicer than the uneven sidewalks in BKK.

The Shangri La is offering special rates for it's 25th anniversary. It's near water taxis and the skytrain.

Among the choices you're looking at - the Grand Hyatt Erawan brings together the best balance, so that would be my first choice definitely. The Sukhothai is also not bad, and I'm also partial towards the Dusit Thani as crellston mentioned.

Dusit Thani is in great location, right at MRT & Sky train, walking distance to Lumphini night market.
There is a new shopping mall opens, Terminal 21 and you might want to stay close by Grande Centrepoint Sukhumvit, big room, great location too right at Asoke bts & MRT.

What is nice about the river are the river boats to the attractions. You leave your hotel car free and start your day with an adventure and breeze instead of traffic and machines.

taxis anywhere in the city are about $2.. so it really doesn't matter getting home at night from anywhere.

...we don't like traffic. The best way to avoid it is to use the river to circumvent the west side of bangkok.. descending from fun public or express river boats at your WAT stops.. then even searching out the Klong boats to traverse to the eastern,central areas to go shopping.

P.S. fares on these public commuter boats are abut 15-30 thb. the ones that cross the river are 3thb. Then the klong ( canal) boats are similar to the river ones in price. You just need to know the name of the stop you want to go to ( or the nearest WAT) and they will charge you accordingly. Really FUN!

try the brand new one, Grande Centre Point Terminal 21, in that brand new shopping mall, Terminal 21, good location too.

(If you're still following this thread, mr_go, many thanks again for your wondrous trip report and photos of that cherished Peninsula. Brings back such a rush of good memories. Counting down the days to next month's return to the Peninsula for Valentine's Day; sweet tradition, down by the river.)

Now, warm congrats to you, englishlass, for forthcoming stay at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. I've always had fine stays at that property for meetings. (Until the St. Regis came along last year with some most agreeable corporate rates and an even more convenient work commute, the SGS - along with the Four Seasons - was the preferred 'in-town' Bangkok business travel locale for me.)

If not already done so, would suggest enquiring for a room/suite on the highest possible floor, end of hall, with a view of 'Lake Ratchada'. (Took me a few business stays to find my most satisfactory SGS lodging.)

Other thoughts/suggestions for your SGS stay : if available, various nooks and crannies at the SGS 'jungle pool' were ideal for snuggling with a loved one and evening jazz (and Champagne) in The Living Room were a delight for me. The always enjoyable Alice Day is currently scheduled for Living Room performances, Feb. and March.

Have fun in the City of Angels. As of ~ 10 days back, Bangkok was as fine as ever (St. Regis, rather brief business trip), with certain '5*' hotels (and certain airlines) offering various specials.

Highest St. Regis BKK room category for me (to date) for meetings has been 'Grande Deluxe'; pleasure to savour your particular lodgings and public venues impressions.

And a bit off-topic, but will still convey of recent promos involving the St. Regis and that cherished business/leisure travel property, the Four Seasons. A friend who works at the FS informs a current Chinese New Year promotion - including Executive Lounge access - has proven to be most popular. (And that FS lounge has always been quite the haven.) For any of you soon-to-be Bangkok travellers, perhaps worth researching.

As for the St. Regis, most unfortunately that Starwood has raised this property from category 5 to 6. Although well deserved, this will make the St. Regis Bangkok more expensive in terms of SPG points redemption for at least one year (March 2012-March 2013).
