3 Nights in Hong Kong-Time to do anything in mainland China?
I just learned that we don't need a visa for our 3 night stay in Hong Kong. It's an extended layover from Phuket to back home in US.
Is there anything we "shouldn't miss" in mainland China that would require us to get a visa ahead of time? There seems to be plenty to do in Hong Kong, but I don't want to get all the way over there and regret not getting a visa.

There is plenty to do to keep you busy for much more than 3 days in Hong Kong. A day trip would cost you the $160 visa fee and the only close place is Shenzhen which is best known for cheap and poorly made knock-offs. Save your mainland China trip for when you have time to do and see more.

This is one of those rare times when even someone who doesn't know you or your interests can say with great confidence,"You have made the right decision."
There is so much to do in Hong Kong that you will leave after 3 nights/2 days with many memories but also a list of things that you will want to sample on a return visit to Hong Kong.
Have a great trip.
