I meant it as an addition, a possible translation if you will, to your wonderful map. The OP probably doesn't read Thai. I thought street names in English could help.

You might try going to JOk a day before you want to eat there and try to reserve a table for whatever time is available, plus you will be able to find it again the next day.

CC has wonderful Banana Flower salad and grilled eggplant. The owner can be offputting, but you go there for the food, not the atmospere.

Tongue Thai is worth a visit. The morning glories and superb.

We also thought Kinnaree on Suk soi 8 was very good - delicious food and nice atmosphere. And at Jim Thompson House, the soft shell crab salad is absolutely fabulous.

i forgot kineree....i enjoyed it very much....in fact we had a GTG there last year but mostly we ate apetizers...

Hopefully this will be seen by Hanuman as he seems very knowledgeable. I want to do a nice dinner for Valentine's day in Bangkok. I've looked at Vertigo, Sirocco, and The Deck and they all seem really expensive! Even more than restaurants here in the USA! My girlfriend and I are Thai and would like Thai food with an emphasis on seafood. The problem is we want something as nice as the restaurants I mentioned above, but not with the price tag of some of them. If anyone has any suggestions we would really appreciate it!

I can think of another restaurant recommendation Hanuman can give you which will be more expensive than any of those mentioned above!

Many fine Thai restaurants are "US prices." Two lovely atmospheric places with excellent food that I mentioned above are Lana Thai at Face and Ruen Malika.

I wouldn't go to Vertigo or Sirocco (or any of the other top of tall building places) for dinner. The food is very expensive and not remarkable. If you want the view go for a drink then go for dinner elsewhere.

Over $700 US? You can't be looking at dinner prices there. Some few places will have a special Valentine's Day dinner for which they charge silly prices. Perhaps you've stumbled across something like that (still, $700????). I went to the websites for both, was able to find a menu for Sirocco, but no prices.

For a view of the river, what about Lord Jim's at the Oriental? They specialize in seafood and have a great river view. But, of course, the food isn't Thai. Likewise, the food at Vertigo and Sirocco is not Thai.

Oh, in answer to what can be more expensive than Vertigo and Sirocco the answer is Gaggan. The chef cooked at Il Bulli and practices molecular cuisine. Fabulous, fascinating food, the tasting menu is quite an experience.

Gaggan is 1,600 baht for the fifteen course tasting menu on a normal night. That's about $55. But be very aware that the Thais celebrate Valentine's Day with a vengeance in Bangkok. Hence the vastly inflated prices on that night.

Love is blind. Why not assume it doesn't have taste-buds as well? I'd recommend Mos Burger and a bunch of flowers instead.

Oh, that's right, we had a special tasting menu. About $150 each.

Have your valentine's celebration on a different night and you can eat anywhere you want.

Oops - I just looked at my AmEx receipt - $290 for the two of us, but that included corkage on the wine.

Since we were with Pook and Mony, the chef had a very special dish he added to our tasting menu. And yup, it was worth every baht.

LOVED the food at Gaggan.!

Recently had dinner at Gaggan, and while the presentation is great, I left feeling unsatisfied. A few dishes were good, but mixed in were a few let downs (notable the baked scallops that was smothered in curry, leaving a 'what am i eating and why?' moment in my mouth) all in all, it missed the mark in bringing our what I find so delicious in traditional Indian cuisine.

The clam soup, while small, was delicious, it's cream based, and wasn't too cloying. Their half baked lobster dish uses a very similar cream base, and was passable. The dish that I liked the most was the small potato ravioli with sliced truffles.

However, Lamb chops were overcooked, and I didn't understand what the seasoning was doing on my already un-salvageable lamb chops. Both the mutton and fish curry were extremely under seasoned.

I think the main issue with Gaggan, is the design of the menu (bringing out a very heavy rich poached egg soup after 10 courses, which already featured meats, curries, seafood) the pacing of the menu is just... inexperienced. Sensate wise - they featured two (way too redundant) bite-this-to-taste-what-splurges-out dishes; the started which was a horrid yoghurt on a spoon and ending with very sad lychee water with rose jelly.

Not worth for the price. Will be sticking to the Rembrandt and Holiday Inn for Indian food in Bangkok.

If you thought you were going to Gaggan for Indian food, no wonder you were disappointed.

Gaggan does have a good selection of Indian food in the a-la-carte menu but lollipops had the tasting menu which is described as "progressive Indian" cuisine, or in another word fusion food.

I've always described the food at Gaggan to be French food cooked by Indians!
