I saw that there will be a Keroncong Festival in Solo May 14-15. If this coincides with your dates, you may want to see a performance. Keroncong is Javanese folk/street music influenced by 17th Century Portuguese Fado and featuring an ensemble of Indonesian and Western instruments and vocalists. There's nothing quite like it.

Just a quick note to say that I have returned from a stunningly memorable trip to Singapore, Java, and Bali that was made even more special than it would otherwise have been by the advice I received from my fellow Fodorites – thanks one and all! I plan to post more, and to offer specific words of appreciation, when I have time. Until then, know that I benefitted greatly from your input and thoroughly enjoyed my time in this special part of the world. :-)

I have begun posting my experiences in Java to my trip report:
http://www.fodors.com/community/asia...a-and-bali.cfm Unfortunately, I failed to tag my initial TR post for "Indonesia," and my efforts to date to get a tag added have not yet achieved that goal, so you might need to look under "Singapore" (for which I did flag it). @ marmot -- I missed your last post about the Keroncong Festival -- but I would have missed that festival in any case, as I didn't reach Solo until later. But thank you for doing what YOU could to bring it to my attention! :-) |
